I have been trying to find out what are some fun games to play with just being by myself or with a friend.  It is hard to find games to play in the pool, but I ask you all to tell me what games do you play when you are swimming with your family and friends.

With my friends, we got really bored and just started chasing diving rings. They sink to the bottom and you go get them. That actually lasted us over an hour.

My cousins have an above ground pool. We 'made' a game that we named Risk. Basically, one person is 'it' and has to sit on the ladder. There are two bases on opposite ends of the pool. The bases are set so everyone else can swim laps back and forth in front of whoever is 'it.' Whoever is 'it' has to try to catch someone. If they leave the ladder and everyone is on one of the two bases, then it's a free run. The swimmers can swim back and forth as much as they want. No one can be tagged until after whoever is 'it' gets back to the ladder to reset. The goal is to get as many laps as possible. If you get tagged your lap count is reset.

If you don't mind spending a bit of money, you could also play volleyball in the pool. Just set up a net and get a ball.
