mr.nintendo : On the contrary, the original Green Lantern was white. Green Lantern has been around sense the 1950's. Of course sense then his outfit has changed a ton and he has had other people playing him like a lot of superheroes do. Such as the Flash or Captain America.

Correction, the Green Lantern who was black is John Stewart, the second to last incarnation of the Green Lantern (considered one of the two Bronze Age Green Lanterns). The most recent GL, Kyle Rayner, is also white. But it is John that appears in the JLA cartoons so that would most likely be the source of the confusion.

Green Lantern has one of the most confusing story lines of any comic I know of. Most likely this is because unlike other superheros, the power can be passed to another since it is all in the ring. Superman is always Clark Kent because he cannot simply give someone his costume and they gain his powers, but with Green Lantern it is whoever has the ring.
