I tried playing playstation games and stuff on a firends computer once and it would not work very well, so perhaps that is a benchmark, but really there area so many other power hungry programmes out there that her old one is looking redundant and I hav enot bought pc is so long I have not been able to keep up with technology at all. my last before this one, was a Sperry!

I'd think for emulation purposes an i5 with 2 GB or RAM or so and a decent GPU would work for that. A Dual Core CPU may be acceptable too. Without knowing what your friend had I can't be sure. I thought you meant PC games.

I think it depends on how much space you have on your Laptop because some games take up a lot of space.

If all you want to do is play PS1 games then you might be able to buy a laptop for under $900 , but if you expect it to play newer PC games you will most likely need to deal out more cash.

The biggest thing to look for is a video card, which most of the laptops lack and instead have a chipset. The problem with having a video card is it instantly makes the computer a lot more expensive, as it wont be just a standard graphics card. The newer graphics card are HUGE and they basically need to make a whole new version for a laptop.

To give you an example of the price increase:

I bought a HP laptop with 2.3 ghz multi core and just a basic chipset for 700$ 2 years ago.
A brand new 2.8ghz multi core with a good video card (forget the exact speed of it sorry but it was sufficient) cost 1800$ at the same store  2 days ago. And it wasn't a very big brand name so in theory should be cheaper than an HP or Dell with the same hardware.

Compared to a desktop the laptops are way more expensive seeing as you can't exactly build your own laptop. For example I am building a 3.8 GHz i5 multicore  with 2x crossfired Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 graphics card. I am going to set it up for Eyefinity with 3x 24" monitors. It is way more powerful than any laptop on the market and I am buying top of the line in almost every aspect.

Even with 3 monitors at over 200$ a piece I am only going to be spending a couple hundred more dollars than that high end generic laptop I mentioned earlier.

I realize you want a lap top, just figured I would show you the difference in  the price vs. power between the two.

To talk more about my current HP laptop, it doesn't handle 3D games very well at all, due to the lack of a video card. I can barely play counter strike ( a really old game if you don't know what it is) and the newest game I can play on it is starcraft 2 (blizzard always makes there games playable on low end computers) on low setting at about 20 fps. It can't handle any new FPS , but a game like LoL works perfect on decent settings.

I will try to load PS1 games onto it and test them out, but I have a feeling it wont work so well, as emulation always requires more resources than it originally took on the console. But I will let you know anyways.

If you could mention any specific game titles (actual PC games please) that you want to play on your new laptop, it would help in determining what kind of hardware you will need.
