See, you have to monitor them while you're grilling - start with a preheated grill. Depends on what kind of steak it is. Thicker steaks will cook better with a medium flame and the lid closed. Sounds like either you're burner is clogged, the flame was too low, or if it was a charcoal grill then there wasn't enough charcoal or the grease put the charcoals out. Or ya didn't have them close enough to the flame lol.

Maybe get thinner steaks? I have 1 minute steaks where you heat up the frying pan to max and make sure the oils hot on it then chuck it in for 30 seconds the flip it for another and you get a nice medium steak put it at a lower temp for rare. And that's not too bad my friend had a steak rare at a restaurant today and omg I swear to you it wasn't cooked we were like why have you given us raw steak =.=
