I kept my girlfriend throughout the entire time I was gone in the Marines. I didn't have a phone for some time and we had letters instead. There were times that were tough and we went through a lot. I married her and we're still happy. I survived a long term relationship and that's the ultimate goal.

I know that there are some circumstances where long distance relationships work but I feel it is best for those relationships that are serious and stretch over a significant period of time. It isn’t really for those who are just starting out in a relationship because I feel that one of the key components that a long distance relationship has to rely on is trust and you simply cannot say for certain that there is solid trust in a relationship that is just starting out. At least that is the way I feel about it.
