I want to discuss a this source of electicity.

I will not provide pictures but if you need a short brief:

This is a way of producing Electricity though water. On a dam, there will be a gate or something which opens and the water flowing down will turn a turbine which will then turn a generator, and the generator produces electricity . (In energy terms, GPE > KE > KE > EE).

I say this could be a good way to produce electricity as it is clean and water is a renewable source. Problem is how expensive it is to make .

Share Ur thoughts ?

I wonder how that happen. Maybe they didn't think about the name. Or something, because it don't look like water is envolved in that anywhere.

I find that it's a very nice energy source. It differs from solar power in the fact that a river can flow both day and night, instead of requiring the sun to be out. I just don't see why it has to be expensive. Basically all it does is turn a turbine to make electricity right? It's dumb that going green tends to cost some green($).

although hydro produces a lot of electricity it wastes a lot of renewable resources more and more dams are being built killing Eco systems so i honestly don't think hydro electricity is the way to go

A substantial percentage of scotlands power comes from dams, its a good method.

this has got to be one of the most illogical forms of producing energy when you consider the effect it has on the environment.

This changes the land down river completely. If you look at the effect dams like this have on the wildlife and ecology of the river you would realize it's not as good as it seems at first. Should it be used? Yeah.... since we've built the dams anyway we might as well make some power with them as well.

geeogree : generaly a lot of the dams in scotland flooded marshland that had little life in it but i agree they shouldnt be built in areas that have large amounts of wildlife.

thenumberone : well, yeah, scotland is sort of an exception right? There isn't much there to begin with Lots of rocks

But there are other places that have had dams built which have effectively changed and in some cases ruined the ecology downstream. Like I said... it's not a bad idea to convert existing dams to produce energy but building more dams for the sake of energy production seems hypocritical to me.

geeogree : lol,lotsa rocks.
Well,if any animals wander into the marsh theyre as good as dead.theres plenty of land available for the deer, wildcats, foxes etc anyway.at any rate theres too many deer here, its funny, theyre causing more harm than the dams.
The only real problem is the fact the water kills the trees, which the falcons/eagles etc need.
I think in areas where you have lots of wildlife small water turbines would be better(if the current is strong enough).

Edit:they built a dam in south africa which through many results, has led to most of the crocodiles dying from disease, sometimes even water animals are effected.

Didowe : This is surprisingly not even remotely a recent for of technology. The turbine in the dam is the exact same mechanism as the water wheel, which was used to provide energy way back in the 15th century. Problem is, a water wheel is no longer provides sufficient energy for even a household with how much one house uses now. And like geeorgee brought up, making dams like this completely alters the type of environment the area downstream is. And when you make such a dramatic change in such a short time, the wildlife has no time to adapt. You might as well be taking every life from that area and put it into a completely different biome. Changes like that can only cause limited loss of wildlife if it is gradual. Making more dams to do such a thing will do the opposite of helping the planet.
