I made a lovely meal the other day with miso soup and there was no way my friend was going to eat it as it contained soy and she said soy is really bad for you.

I thought this cannot be true I drink soy milk every day, it is organic, low in fat and sugar and I must be better than cows milk.

Now I hear from here that soy is bad and as my friend refused to eat my soup I am led to believe that I now must stop consuming it too.

Is soy bad for you, and should I stop drinking it?

what is a better alternative other than cows milk? and please dont say goat or rice

You said it yourself, its organic and low in fat and sugar. I don't drink soy milk, but that's just because I don't like the way it tastes. If you want to use it, go ahead. You should ask your friend why they think soy milk is bad for you and see what their reason is. Research it yourself- chances are, someone out there knows more about soy milk than your friend does and can give you a good answer. Don't just take your friend's word for it.

Totts : I am a chef and I have studied nutrition as well. I would say your friend is probably wrong. Also, miso is made with fermented soy which is the healthiest form of soy you can consume. Even if is harmful (which is debatable), one portion of anything is not enough to cause the biological changes that stem from over-consumption of substance.

I think the real problem here is your friend's gratitude. If they have made a conscious decision not to consume soy, then fair enough, but if they are insinuating that one portion of miso can hurt somebody then I would say they are being foolish.

Middlemoor is correct, fermented soy is a very healthy food. And other soy products in general.

Soy IS an allergen, but if you are not allergic then I see no reason to avoid it. Soy has been consumed for thousands of years, notably in Japan. I eat soy products regularly as well and have not noticed any negative effects- If anything, consuming soy has improved my health, probably most noticable in my skin.

If you pay attention you may notice that any research trying to prove that soy is somehow "bad" is funded by the meat and dairy industry. Not a coincidence. They are afraid of losing $$$! Additionally, soy has many applications beyond meat and dairy "imitation"- It is also found in hundreds of common foods (where you might not expect), in the form of soybean oil and textured soy protein.

As far as I know soya isn't bad for your health. I used to believe the opposite in the past.
Personally, I prefe having "real" milk, so I don't have any soya. But I don't think that there is a problem to use it, if you like it.

Soy is awesome if prepared well. Try having soy in meatloaf with brown rice. One of the best things I've ever had!
