I admit I merely skimmed much of the topic after the first post, but I would assume people were misreading you because it was a bit of a shift from the original question. Over whether or not games themselves are art, rather than if playing them was.

Yes.

Saying its not is like saying films and photography are not art.

In fact, about almost more than a century ago, the art community once dismay photography as art until it has been proven otherwise seeing as it is as inspirational as painting.

Not sure if I said it right however I am trying to say is that the art community once thought that photography would be easier than painting for example.

It is not a fact since photography is as challenging as painting when it comes to capturing the best picture. Plus the whole process such burning for example to enhance the photos.

Anyhow, video games is no difference in terms of art. Take Okami for example. Never have I played the game with such artistic style and kept the replay value formula there.

Street Fighter IV originally was suppose to have that style. Wish they did 'cause Okami style is awesome. Its out for the PS2 and Nintendo Wii. Those who own either two consoles should ought to check that out.

Its really dependent on your definition of art. I'd say yeah, just because the majority of games I've played I could be seen as being artistic in some aspect or another.

Of course I'm pretty lenient in my judgment of what is art and what is not. I could find anything done in a skillful manner artistic, just as i could see anything on some extreme end of a scale as being a work of art, especially when its an attempt to bring forth/create something such as a video game.

Any product of ones mind brought to light by any means seems me good enough to be considered a work of art. You just have to look at it in the right light (which can sometimes mean a dim room while wearing beer goggles).

Yeah, of course there's art involved, as in the character and background sketches, the design of accessories, the music, all these traditional artforms are eventually included or adapted to the work (the game)but look at it this way:

achieving to build worlds characters and stories that sustain all kinds of emotion, avid interest, satisfaction, using code to move pixels around is really an artform in itself, a collective one albeit, generally speaking.

It's come a long way now but think about it for a minute.

I am a giant art nerd, so it's probably a good given that I'll consider games as art. Many of the points I would express have already been brought up by other members here, but I'll reiterate some of them, I suppose, so I can be clear as to why.

I see a game as an artistic medium. It's like a canvas, an empty journal, a roll of unexposed film. It's a blank slate waiting to be shaped into something tangible. It's a vast collection of visual art that's been molded and integrated into images and moving shapes that resemble things we can readily recognize. It's a story, which these recognizable models act out, granting not only themselves, but said story a semblance of life. It's also a collection (usually) of intricate musical scores, specifically composed to add more life to its preceding elements. In later games, it additionally is a repository of vocal artistry specifically compiled for that work.

In its own right, it is an exhibition, but all the same, it is an art. There is too much artistic effort put into a lot of these works to regard them as anything else.

Yes. I believe that they are a form of art. plus most people have to make concept art or sketches to make them.

Good games are true art form especially those that redefine how we play.

It takes amazing artistic talent to make any videogame, so I vote yes that they are a form of art.

To be honest, it all depends on the game. Things like Okami and Paper Mario can be said to have an artistic look about them yet other games like the Final Fantasy games have an amazing story which can also be considered art. Yet, it is also about opinion because everyone has a different style of art that the prefer over others.

Hmm... the "is ____ art?" question is always a controversial one.

Perhaps the reason emotions tend to run so high on this topic is that art is, in essence, that in which someone finds aesthetic pleasure and/or symbolic significance. So to answer the question of what is considered art, we have to determine what things other people ought to find pleasing, which is inevitably a judgment on the beholder.

This in turn raises several other tough questions, such as
1) Is the "art-ness" of something related to its quality, or is it inherent in all things that (however unsuccessfully) seek to produce something beautiful?
2) Can all things that produce meaningful experiences be considered art?
3) What the heck is "meaningful," anyway?

Some may say the act of reading is not an art, and yet literary criticism could be considered one. And if you're going to include the "art of war" or "martial arts" then why not include the "art" of gaming?

making a video game is an ART!!! there is no denying it. really and truly there is noooooo denying it. it is and forever will be an art.
