Vash - While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wee represents the answer. Wee will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wee will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Again I say what does Xbox or Playstation mean? Most video game systems names haven't meant anything.

I heard about this earlier today... I'm quite disappointed actually.. Revolution is a WAAAY better name that "Wii" it seems so childish... Revolution asleast sounds a little more.... serious...

Wii does sound sort of childish, it's like little kids screaming "wheeee" as their playing their super mario brother games.

In any case, the name wont stop me from buying the system.

Is Xbox a word? No. What's Playstation a compound word. The Xbox fanboys went nuts when the official name was Xbox 360 because they became so attached to Xenon.

And I'll say it again, from a marketing standpoint Wii is the better choice. It's short, simple, and to the point. Most consumers don't know nearly as much about videogames as any of us. If you keep it something simple then it has more chance to catch on. Look at iPod, Google, Yahoo, etc. They probably all sounded totally stupid when first thought up, but now who doesn't know what they are. If Wii is marketed right then it could be a huge hit. Nintendo has gotten better with it's image lately.

Oh and who is the one that is brainwashed here? The one accepting the new name or the one clinging to a code name?

'revolution' is probably what picked up nintendo's rep, i know gc is regarded as a 'kid's console' compared to the more mature games on the Xbox and PS2. revolution, as the word means itself, suggested a new approach to the next generation console... and then they butcher those dreams with frickin' WII!!!

First off I never said people were simpletons. I'm simply saying they don't get the news about consoles nearly as much as we do because they don't check for it.

Secondly Nintendo got so much media coverage that it wasn't even funny. If the Big N had announced the Gamecube 2 would that of been reported on CNN and MSNBC? Probably not, and if it was, it wouldn't of been nearly as big a deal. I mean I mentioned something to one of the school's Bible professors about how everyone on IGN was going crazy about the name and he isn't a person that keeps up with videogames and he said he had heard about it.

Thirdly you don't associate Wii with a videogame console yet. It was just announced two days ago. You guys really should give it longer than two days before you denounce the end of Nintendo over the name for it's next console. Also another I'm guessing most of you don't know is that Nintendo is the only console maker that ends up making a profit from hardware sales. Meaning they are the only one that sells their hardware for more than it takes to make it. Microsoft lost quite a bit of money for every Xbox/ 360 sold (and more for every one modded, and 360's are doing horribly in Japan). Sony lost money on every PS2 they sold. Sony looses money on every PSP they sell. MS and Sony use their software to make money back. PSP software is doing badly right now, suppossedly UMD movies are going to stop being made or way few titles are going to be realeased.

Fourthly, as far as Nintendo going down because of this gen I think the Japanese have something to say about that. Why don't I ask one, oh wait they are all too busy playinng the DS. For a while the DS was selling for about as much as a PSP in Japan because they are in such high demand. They still may be now. You could return your DS with it's box and instruction booklet and get almost the price you paid for it. Then the DS Light was released and picked right up where the DS left off. Nintendo is making an insane profit from the DS and it's games. Not to mention the GBA is still doing decently well there and is selling quite well in the US.

Fifthly, while yes Wii isn't simple and to the point as you are saying. I mean it from a different angle. I got my GC the year it came out, my little bro got his PS2 that year and his Xbox the year after. It took our mom quite a while (read: until just recently) to know who had what system and what room it was in. She's definately not stupid, she just simply doesn't keep up with game systems. So you get a parent that doesn't know much about games is it easier for them to remember the Xbox 360 or simply the Wii? In Nintendo's officially said that it's just called Wii not Nintendo Wii.

While I did like the name Revolution, the Japanese have a super hard time pronouncing it. Don't believe me? Well check out this article:

And finally yes when I first heard the name I said "what?" And I didn't really like it, but as I listened and thought about it a bit it made sense. As Matt from IGN said a name doesn't sell a product, the product sells the name. So again don't prononce Nintendo dead 2 days after you heard it's name. If you don't buy a system because of it's name that's kinda sad.

Eventually all the name stuff will die down. Besides the Wii/ Revolution is looking to be quite an awesome system. We'll know for sure in a little over a week.

Edit: And think about it this way, the more they make fun of it, the more the name is getting out there.

Still the stupidest excuse of changing the name I have ever heard of. No matter what this is the dumbest name from any console in the past and near future.

The marketing is even witty, my dog could do better..... Wii is a horrible excuse for a name, and thats that... I'll still buy the system, but for me, it will always be Revolution...

I remember they called it Ultra 64 all the way up to the point that it came out, and suddenly they renamed it to Nintendo 64. I was so pissed off because I just absolutely hated the name Nintendo 64 and liked Ultra 64 so much better. After a while I just got use to the new name and it didn't bother me anymore.

I'm not in love with the name. I still like Revolution better as a name, however I still think that from a marketing standpoint Wii is the better name. Also why are you saying it's a bad thing that Nintendo makes profit off their system? They are usually the cheapest system out and they still end up making money. Even then, you still get top quality. My SNES, N 64, and GC all still work like they are baically new. Does my PSX, PS2, or Xbox? Nope. My PS 2 won't play blue/purple discs, won't play PS 1 discs, half the time won't play normal PS2 games. The Xbox hasn't done nearly as bad, but it has frozen on me several times and just done some kinda silly stuff. But think about it this way, I payed $200 for a system that still works like it's new, and I payed $300 for a weaker system (yes the PS2 is weaker than the GC) that won't play half the stuff it's suppossed to. Nintendo just knows how do things cost effectively.

Also part of the reason I have argued so much is because last week when this was announced you had people claiming this was the doom of Nintendo on IGN just because of the systems name. It's just totally silly.

And I still say that if any company is going to drop out of the console race Nintendo is the least likely to be it. Sony has so much riding on people paying $600 (or however much the PS3 will be) to just buy the system. They also are putting their Blu-Ray format in it. I'm thinking if the PS3 fails Blu-Ray does too. If Blu-Ray fails PS3 also takes a hit. They will be losing money on every system they sell, so if it doesn't sell well they lost money on what sold and what is sitting around in stock. 360 is a tad different, it is competing directly with the PS3, so people that are looking at both to see which one is better. If PS3 is successful, then because the 360 is $400 right now it has a rough time having success while the PS3 has success. Nintendo is going a different enough route to become a second system in many homes. The rumored price being $200 also helps. And since they are doing the whole new controller thing, they have something else to offer consumers.

Oh and Glenny I think some people may just call it Nintendo or Revolution. It could end up with 3 names, only time will tell. And also I told someone else last night and he sorta agrees with me, he doesn't neccessarily like the game, but it will be quite marketable.

what would make blu ray fail? all i can really guess... is that they cant make games big enough to use all that memory... or the regular user is satisfied with the 4.3(or 4.7 i forget) gig we have now... likei have olnly bought 1 dual layer dvd... for 6 bucks AUD, which is cheap... and i still havent used it yet... after about a month... the thing about that is, 2 dvds can match the memory for under 50 cents.

Not sure. But they are competeing against HD-DVD. If you ever heard of the Beta Max that was Sony's version of the VCR and tapes. My dad said his parents got one and it was a piece of junk.

The conversation in this thread is pretty worthless, everyone (except me) has a biased opinion toward one of the next gen gaming systems.

Now for an honest, unbiased opinion on the next gen systems...
They are all gonna be cool, each with their own amazing features and each that will have so much to offer including great games.

I'm not biased... They all will be GREAT systems.... Its just 360 and PS2 are gunna be WAY expensive.. Where as Nintendo 'Wiivolution' will be cost effect and still have killer games.. yah gurrr me?

I'm sure all three systems are going to be well done. But I don't really care about HD, and I don't want to spend $400 or more on just the system. Wiivolution is just what I happen to like. I'll admit all three current gen systems have their share of great games but the hardware is a different story (again my PS2 is just so weird). But for example I have about 105 hours in Dragon Quest VIII (really probably around 90 to 95 because I just left it sitting a few times). It's a really great game expect a review of it from me soon.
