I think Mario 2 is a good game, but not AS a Mario game. If they just kept the original hero of the game, it wouldn't have been seen as so bad because you wouldn't compare it to all the Mario games. But USA was lazy and redid it with Mario characters. My least favorite was Mario is Missing and Mario Time Machine. It was about as close to Mario as Mario 2, but with less fun levels and game play.

Mario's Fundamentals is self-explanatory.

SPM was lame with its partners, and the storyline was like something out of a bad fanfiction that had "Mario" slapped onto it at the last minute. The storyline wasn't bad, just not fit for Paper Mario. It was cool to be able to play as Bowser, Luigi and Peach, but not at the cost of everything else. "Pixls" were retarded, and whichever one you got in a certain chapter, you barely even used it again after that chapter, so you pretty much forgot they were even there. I know they were going for originality, but TTYD did that just fine (though I hated Flurrie and Vivian).

I hate all Mario games equally as I've never been a fan of Mario or the NES console.
