NotJon : I'm fine that it went out, didn't work to the extent that was intended.

waste of money.

you would have been better off not going into almost 1 trillion dollars worth of debt but hey.... I'm not a politician so what do I know right?

The present American debt is in the 14 trillions. When I was on wall street last summer, they have a big debt counter thing and the debt of the american government is increasing by the tens of thousands every second. Normally, the people should be freaking out when they see that, but everyone walks by like it's nothing. I think at 15 trillion in debt the government would have to declare official bankruptcy as a nation. Spending this extra trillion was kind of a risky move, but hey, the republicans will probably just declare war on whoever tries to claim their debts.

More jobs is a definate bonus, but how long did the jobs last...
I'm not sure what the taxes were like before this plan came into place, but isn't that what the government makes most of their money from, cutting it by 95% is a major risky move and without that tax money, how are they paying back the debt (the government).

And with the world economy as it is atm, is there a country that isn't largely in debt? Our government dished out $900 to a large portion of Australians just because it was in stimulus at the time and in the belief that if people spent this $900 at the shops more people wouldn't be fired from jobs. Most people i know baught alcohol with it. Now Australia is in debt i believe (any aussies feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, i've been out of the loop for a while).

Solehite : wow, I'm glad to see some people actually realize the ramifications of what a stimulus does.

when the government takes your money.... wastes it on bureaucrats, and then tries to give back some of it to "stimulate" the economy is a joke. How about you stop spending so much money, cut taxes and let the real people in the country make jobs. Entrepreneurs are the ones that are going to save the economy not the government. The government is an expense not an asset. Why don't people realize that?

Most of the debt is from interest of debt we have had for decades... mostly from Reagen and Bush the Elder.

http://zfacts.com/p/318.html

And yes, cutting taxes generally is a stupid plan, but Americans have this really huge problem with taxes... it's why we aren't part of the UK today. It does not matter how important it is, if you try to raise taxes you will fail because the people will go against you. Americans yell and whine about being overtaxed, but in reality we are one of the six lowest taxed countries in the world... only the Swiss pay less in taxes on average!

Elara : Thanks for the extra information. I guess you could look on the positive side and can say that so far the Obama government hasn't spent as much as the previous...

geeogree : I think most people don't realise that the government is an expense, because a lot of people don't sit and think about what the government does, or will do until it's near election time. Sure the media will report things, but most people will forget about it by the next few days to a week.
