i was watching tv last night about a documentary about KGB and CIA spying... and it turns out that pope john paul I may o been assassinared... several reasons occured which were interesting

1. [Mafia] he has started an investigation into the vatican bank, which was into underhanded dealings

2. [cia] he was planning to re-tie connections with russia, meeting with high powered catholic ministers of russia. Also coming from poland, [i believe, an iron curtain country] he often made trips there, with speeches. Also, he is the most poweful leader in the world... 1 billion people follow him, if he was to speak out against democracy, it would hurt america deeply.

obviously, two is a better reason i believe, but the cia i feel are less likely to murder a pope than a greedy mob boss, even though he may be catholic.

any other opinions?

The CIA does do a lot of things like that, that nobody will ever find out about... The Pope was extremely old and suffered from parkinsons disease... Anywho... firstly, John Paul I was Italian. He was Pope for only 33 days. The Wikipedia entry on him is very informative.

Personally, I'd believe the first theory as much as the second. The Church was not happy with John Paul I, and there was a lot of controversy surrounding his death and how there was no autopsy because he was embalmed the day after he died. The CIA might have done it... but why would the Church act the way they did.

Now the joke, bit dated but still funny:
