So everytime I try to play this game (or the LeafGreen version) after I press start at the menu it pops up and says "The 1m sub-circuit board is not installed." I have no idea what this is or how to fix it. If anyone knows how I can fix this and play the game then please help. Thanks in advance!

Just hit whatever button is assigned to "A"... lemme see, I think the default is... Z? Or better yet, double-click the screen when the game loads, and set your custom controls. Then, back at the game, hit whatever button you chose to use as "A".

I've seen that message before when I played the game. I just went onto skipping that part and played it, but couldn't save in-game(instead I just used that save state thing). Could that have to do with the circuit board message?

To answer your other question if the keys aren't working have you done everything in the troubleshooting for using the keyboard?
if so check the assigned keys and try to change them
if all else fails i can't help you :p
