Since the 15th is his birthday but school's out monday ,I would do this (sorry if there is a post similar to mine).

Well anyway, Lawton may be doing a small parade celebrating his birthday. Not only he was trying to stop the black/white segragation (sorry if mispelled) but also ,he was tryng to equalize all races into being treated normally. I think without him, I may be be in a non-white school and possibly can't speak english. People should be grateful for what he did.

I'm doing nothing because I live in Canada and we don't celebrate his birthday....

however, in my opinion his dream hasn't been realized yet.... look who the president is and listen to the media... all they talk about is how Obama is black... nothing has really changed except people are smarter about their racism.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

That right there is the problem in America in todays world, not race or religion. People are being held higher then others depending on their "character or status" in society. That is ultimately what makes America corrupt.

Although he might have assisted in stopping white & black segregation he sure as heck does not deserve all the credit for it. People in todays world still use color as a means of judgment and blame.

MLK didn't free the slaves, MLK didn't give blacks absolute control over society, MLK was just a activist & civil rights leader who was preaching about what is wrong in society. Black and white segregation depends on you not him that is the key here.

Although he does deserve credit and respect, I think many people are giving him too much credit. While MLK did attempt to fix a few problems, what he did also created new ones as well so everything is not all handy dandy as far as race. I think that right now we are in a deeper hole then before. Society is corrupt because of peoples character or status in society. That is the real issue at hand.

Killing a judge is worse then killing a citizen, as you can see equal rights is no where near fixed. Race is only a small unimportant part of the bigger picture. It meant a lot back then but now and days race means nothing compared to status.

JigSaw, you don't really know what "character" is do you? There is no similarity to status, at all. We still don't judge by character, and that is what is wrong with the world. Character is things like being honorable or corrupt, peaceful or violent... they are character traits; and we should judge people based on their character, not appearances or money, or social status. We should choose the people who are honorable over the people that are rich, the people who are compassionate over the people who are power-hungry; and who they are or where they came from should not matter! That is what King was talking about, and you would know that if you bothered to pick up a dictionary instead of making a snap-judgment about what "character" means.

Yes, MLK was a leader, just like Ghandi was a leader. They get the credit because they were the leaders that got results, he got JFK to listen and then LBJ pushed his reforms through after he was assassinated.

And we are still a long way from MLK's dream, because racism does still exist and you can see that when looking at things that people say about the President. He isn't "our black President", he is our President that just happens to be half black. And it has been made clear that people still have a problem with that (*cough*birthers*cough*).

You bring up the killing of that Judge. You know why they are flipping about that? Because we elect officials to represent us and to interpret our laws and if you kill those people that is an attempt to disrupt the government and cause chaos for the country. Notice they are making the same amount of fuss over the death of a 9 year old child, and I am certain that everyone in that community is just as angry over every single death, and that man will die for ever single death. But the death of the Judge causes problems, because then they need to talk about replacing his vacant position, do they need to have a special election? Do they wait to fill the seat? There are a lot of things to talk about.

But I digress, this is a thread for Dr. King. Yes, our world is not perfect but it is a hell of a lot better than it was in his day. We don't have lynching anymore, there isn't segregation anymore. The point isn't that it is 100% better but that we are moving in the right direction and by honoring his memory we keep that hope alive that one day will reach the point where society is 100% better and there is no racism or classism, or any other "ism"... a day when people really are judged solely on the content of their character and not the color of their skin on the connections they have or the contents of their wallets. That is what Martin Luther King Jr Day is all about, Charlie Brown.

Well, I always saw MLK as a huge role model for me. I'm not going to get into this little discussion right now, so I'll just wish him a happy birthday. If I'm correct, he would've been 82 years old today. Oh, and today's my mom's birthday, so you guys can wish her a happy birthday too
