If you mean lyrics the greatest advice i can give you is that at the Guitar Center (in my opinion one of the greatest music stores I've been to) I seen a rhyming manual that is said to be helpful to those who are trying to write a song, and if you are talking about actually playing the music with it the thing i do is just experiment with chords and proper scaling to a measured drum beat in the background (preferably something you know you are gonna use in the song) and see how it effects you, chances are that if you are grooving with the beat and the music you're playing then you have found your song!

Totts : I wrote my girlfriend a song and I just rhymed like a poem but kept a beat in my head an with my voice. My advice is to write a song using your voice as the judge. If it sounds ok when you sing it then it should sound ok with music.

It's like the old saying goes: "If you want to write, read." Fancying myself a writer, I think the number one thing that has helped is reading. "How-to" books and helps can only get you so far. Applying this logic to music: If you want to write music, listen. Here are some other things I found helpful:

1. Always write what's in your heart. Don't try to manufacture what's not there.
2. You don't always have to rhyme.
3. Find what works best for you.
4. Don't sellout. Nothing is worse than having to be (write) someone (something) you're not. (Look at Dylan. No compromise there.)
5. Listen to music you DON'T like. Eventually you will understand why you don't like it and be able to see why other people do.
6. Sometimes you have to let the music say more than the words.

Aside from that, listen to bands, songwriters, and whoever else other people think are great. They got that "great" label for a reason. Hope that helps. Best of luck to you, friend.

I personally don't know anything about songwriting but you should check out 'How I Write A Song A Day' and perhaps 'A Short Song About Nothing In Particular', both by Jonathan Mann, a favorite singer of mine. Hope that helps!

I do most of the musical writing for my band I do write some songs to but you have to let the words come to you. You can't force yourself into writing something.

I can't really help too much because I've only ever written one song successfully, and I don't think it was very good. But if you're going to write a song, you have to think of something that you feel very strongly about. Say a relative who passed away, or a really bad break up. Take the feeling it gives you and just start writing down things that come to your mind when you think about it. That's how I wrote my song.
