For one, it would be a massive project, and for two, they seem to be moving forward with the series instead of going back to the oldest variants now.

That said, there are hacks that follow the story pretty well.

I never cared so much for the complicated stats, I just simplified it to fight a fast pokemon to upgrade your speed. Fight a tough defense one to get better defense and just went from there.

Indeed it is. I really enjoy this game. Team Plasma seems decisively EVIL. Like Magma, Aqua, Galactic... they were evil, but had good intentions. Plasma just... shiver. I don't see how their plan is not evil. (I am further in the game than some people. Just got my third badge)

I'd say personally it started going downhill in Sinnoh. I liked Hoenn, but a lot of people have said Hoenn is the beginning of the end. I liked the season as a whole, but Sinnoh ruined it for me.

I'd say it went downhill because of there being way too many pokemon, and most of them are just recycled from other gens. Plus, the inclusion of useless characters in Sinnoh and following the same story every episode. You could watch all of seasons 1-5 and know what's going on in the future, because they recycle plot.

However, the RGR has two pokemon hacks where you play as a team rocket member.

Pokemon Toxic Purple in the GBA section, is an incomplete hack (about 20 minutes of play time, but is worth the effort) and puts you in the reigns of a starting member of Team Rocket.

Pokemon TRE (Team Rocket Edition) is under the game boy section. It's a hack of pokemon red, and is a very unique game, that I myself have even added to my games list, I reccomend it.
