The best part of Martial arts for fitness would have to be muay Thai or kick boxing, both are physically demanding and take a lot of energy and skill to become god at it.. And you get pretty cut while doing it.

Bruce Lee's teachings are worth looking into.
His work is comprehensive and has balanced view on martial arts.

Karate is good, although I'm not sure what's available in your area but I personally think Tai Chi chuan is good to start out with, then move on to kickboxing.

I think in my opinion, Tae Kwon Do is, the best martial arts for fitness, since this fightin style concentrate on legs more than hands, you have to do some joggin(runnin) to make your hip bones flixable also, makin push- ups for your hands strength, both of them are important in fitness & muscles.

Tae Kwon Doe is what I would say as well, because I stopped going and BANG flabby skin again.
I am definitely going back sometime, tennis isn't cutting it.
Literally

I think it depends on the person your up against. Jiu jitsu is a good martial arts form to use in cases of self defense because you can get your opponents on the ground and force them into uncomfortable positions if youre good enough. MMA is good if you're fighting someone and it's just regular combat. Taw Kwan do, at least to me, does a little bit of both. But it really does depend on things such as the person, possibly location, and even maybe the situation. Sometimes some techniques won't be necessary in certain situations and in others they might be. I do prefer MMA but it really does depend. Although nowadays I'd get my butt kicked because I haven't gone to karate in like 3 years.
