Our stomach contain very strong acid called hydrochloric acid, which is strong enough to dissolve aluminum foil.

Our bodies have over 600 muscles, enough to lift 11 SUV s.

The small intestine is 25 miles long.

Did you know Polar Bears can run at 25 miles an hour and jump over 6 feet in the air?

A single rye plant can spread up to 400 miles of roots underground.

A thimbleful of a neutron star would weigh over 100 million tons.

Male seahorses give birth to offspring.

A man's testicles reproduce 10million sperm cells each day, enough to repopulate the planet in 6 months.

That explains a lot .

Plasma Is An Ionized Gas.

When Sharks Breath In Blood They Can Find EXACTLY Where It Has Come From.

Smaller Scorpions Have More Poison/Venom (I'm Not Sure If Its Venom Or Poison.)

It Takes On Average 24 Hours For Food To Fully Digest.

There Are 365 Days In A Year. (366 In A Leap Year.)

If One Of Your Parents Have Blue Eyes And The Other Has Brown Eyes Most Of The Time The Child Will Have Brown Eyes.

A Cockroach Can Live For A While Without A Head.

That's All I Can Think Of Currently.

I'd like to comment on the food one. While it's common belief that it takes food 24 hours to digest I've read from more than one source that it takes just 12-15 hours. I haven't come across an exact time, but it should be around those lengths. Of course it depends on which food it is.

To add to the cockroach fact, they've been around for millions of years. I think humans will die out long before cockroaches do.

hoguan : The small intestine is nowhere NEAR 25 miles long. It averages roughly 23 feet. Also, the hydrochloric acid in your stomach acid is only in a concentration less than 5500 parts per million. That little amount of it is not enough to do much of anything to aluminum foil. At that low of a concentration, it would be a severe limiting reactant in that reaction. So if you ate aluminum foil, it would not be digested. Last, no human can lift 11 SUVs. I won't go into the muscles thing because that can TECHNICALLY be true depending on how you want to look at it.

For my next science fact, canines have the largest range of sizes of any animal species.

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months, and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat up one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it.)

A cockroach will live 9 days without its head before it starves to death.

There are about one trillion bacteria right now on each of your feet.

Boiling point isn't defined by temperature of the liquid. A liquid boils when the pressure of the liquid is higher than the surrounding atmospheric pressure. Temperature changes the pressure of a liquid. If you simply decreased the atmospheric pressure via closed container, you can make water boil at room temperature, and you could touch it without it burning you.

Ostriches can run faster than horses, and the males can roar like lions.

If you keep a goldfish, in a dark room, it will become pale.

During World War II, Americans tried to train bats to drop bombs.

The most abundant human blood type is Type O.
Red blood cells are made in the bone marrow.
Tirerdness can be caused by not enough oxygen in the blood or know as being anemic.

Giant insects are impossible. Even if we found some way to make an insect spontaneously grow to giant sizes (like some sort of science fiction growth ray), the insect would die. It's circulatory system is set up to take in air through it's outer body like a membrane because the oxygen requirements for creatures that size is too small for lungs to be cost effective. If they were grown with this hypothetical growth ray, they would immediately suffocate because that circulatory system would not take in the amount of oxygen necessary to support it's new giant size.

Did you know blood sucking hookworms inhabit 700 million people worldwide?

The average person accidentally eats 430 bugs each year of their lives.

Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system with surface temperature above 450 C.

Ants are so hardworking, they never sleep.

Albert Einstein had speech difficulties at an early age.

The average male brain is larger than an average female brain.

Cyro Xero : Oh. In that case, no. That would not be an issue. Lizards have lungs, so if this hypothetical growth ray (or whatever) were used on a lizard to create a dinosaur, it already has the proper circulatory system to get significant oxygen through the body. Insects and arachnids, however, do not have lungs like other creatures. Their circulatory system is only sufficient for small life forms such as themselves, which is why they would suffocate.

My next science fact is that the saying that the ocean is blue because of the reflection of the sky is false. The blue/violet light has the shortest wavelength of the visible light spectrum, so it is the only color that can pass through the deeper levels of the ocean where water molecules are compressed tighter and tighter, which is why the color gets darker blue the farther you go down.

Just read about this today and it was super interesting so I thought I'd share.

Smallest rotary motor in biology, the ATP synthase. All the work done in your body is fueled by breaking a chemical bond in ATP, the “currency of energy”. Did you know that you convert your body weight (or an estimated 50 kg) of ATP per day?!

Where does this ATP come from? It is synthesized by an incredibly sophisticated molecular machine, the ATP synthase, embedded in the inner membrane of our mitochondria. Energy from the oxidation of food results in protons being pumped across the membrane to create a proton gradient. The protons drive the rotation of a circular ring of proteins in the membrane that in turn move a central shaft. The shaft interacts sequentially with one of 3 catalytic sites within a hexamer, making ATP (little butterflies in the movie!). The ATP synthase rotates about 150 times/second

To visualize the rotation under a microscope, a very long fluorescent rod (actin filament) was chemically attached to the central shaft. Watch real movies (not animations!) of the enzyme spinning here: http://www.k2.phys.waseda.ac.jp/F1movies/F1long.htm

Notice the rotation is slower with longer rods. The rotor produces a torque of 40 pN nm (40 pico Newtons x nanometer), irrespective of the load. This would be the force you would need to rotate a 500 m long rod while standing at the bottom of a large swimming pool at the rate shown in the movie.

How did this amazing rotor evolve? The hexameric structure is related to DNA helicases that rotate along the DNA double helix, using ATP to unzip the two strands apart. The H+ motor has precedence in flagella motors that use proton gradients to drive rotation of long filaments, allowing bacteria to tumble through their surroundings. At some point, a H+ driven motor came together with a helicase like hexamer to create a rotor driving the hexamer in reverse, to synthesize ATP.

The 1997 Nobel prize in Chemistry was awarded to John Walker and Paul Boyer for solving the structure and cyclical mechanism of the ATP synthase, respectively.

Lazlo Falconi : I read Linus Torvalds Google+ too

Another random science thread from me. Some eucalyptus trees develop an oil that is more flammable as a tool for competition. The oil they produce can catch fire just from a hot and sunny day. It does this to burn down other plants that would compete for the same resources that it uses and aren't as capable of surviving a forest fire.
