Robots need to be programmed to do things, as they cannot do things that haven't been told to do.

So, the only way robots would be able to take over the world is if someone programmed them as super smart, self suffiecent, war-like robots. However, technically that would mean that humans took over the world, even if they get obliterated.

Yeah they can take over the world if they are programmed well enough. By that I mean they should be able to know how to make eachother because if they dont they are bound to break down and die off. They also need some good intelligence

I can't imagine why my toaster or even my microwave oven would do such a thing. I used to be uber-scared of such things as a child thanks to the Terminator movies, however, it's so much more science-fiction than science fact for me to take it seriously anymore.

I don't believe it, at least not in a near future. Not even in a far future. In order to take over the world machines would need to develop a extremely high level of intelligence and autonomous thinking. Not only the capability of making counts very fast but also dexterity to analyse the surrounding environment and take the right decisions at the right moments. So, basically, man would need to build a totally functional artificial brain and I don't see it coming not even in a far future
