It's a Kirby game alright. Here's a checklist

1)Cute styles, Check Plus
2)Kirby characters and enemies (Duh!) Check
3) Copy abilities, Check (The Metamato stuff technically counts)
4)The ability to through enemies and projectiles at others, Check
5)Simple, yet still decently difficult gameplay Check
6)Ability to inhale, Nope, but Canvas Curse didn't have it either.
7) Platformer genre, Check

So, yeah it counts in my book

Obviously it should, although they are intending to do a yoshi game of the same style so maybe it will become a whole new series altogether somewhat like a crossover of Nintendo characters.
