Turtwig is my favorite. Bulbasaur is a close second, though. It learns earthquake to deal with the pesky fire and steel type. It also learns crunch, which is a solid dark type move. It can even be taught rock slide to deal with flying type pokemon.
Don't use it against Candice though.

Leaf Storm

When I started pokemon red on my blackberry =P, I got a Bulbasaur and didn't capture another pokemon until after I completed the Vermillion City Gym and defeated all the trainers on the path to the rock tunnel (At which point I had a level 40 venusaur). I only caught enough pokemon to get HM05 and then released them again. Only pokemon I'm going to keep as part of my team are pokemon given to me in-game (starter, eevee, etc). Any other pokemon are just to get me past a point that requires something Venusaur cant learn.

Point is, Bulbasaur and his evolutions are absolutely mad tough and pretty damn strong.

People keep bringing up the fact that Chikorita can be taught Earthquake, but Torterra learns it by level up! It has only four weaknesses, Ice, Fire, Bug, and Flying as opposed to, Meganium, who is weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, Bug. Torterra's base stat total is 525, Meganium's is also 525. BULBASAUR ALL THE WAY! He can learn some sweet moves and he's cute, plus his evolutions (mainly Venosaur or whatever his name is) are awesome. Turtwig is pretty cool too, but he just doesn't compare to Bulbasaur in my opinion.
