Hi All,
I am going to be getting a new PS3 hopefully over the weekend as a birthday present of sorts. I was planning on getting a 320gb Slim console that would include the PS Move. Some time ago I made a separate thread asking if anyone knew how to transfer data from a ps3 via flash drives but did not get any advice and ended up finding out that I need to transfer game data which can not be done via flash drives. I was planning on buying my new console at Best Buy thinking that their Geek Squad service would do an in store data transfer based on what their website says. I called a couple of Best Buy stores in my area earlier this evening and was basically told on my third store that they don’t do that and, to call a Gamestop and see if they would do it and, I called a Gamestop store that is actually five minutes from my home and although the gentleman I spoke with was extremely nice he told me they don’t do this either. I really want to save my game data as I do have several online rankings from PSN and such and a couple of downloaded games. I’m a bit irked because I feel that if you advertise something such as an in store service and then when you call that same business and they tell you that they don’t do that, that it is a form of false advertising. So before I do what most consumers do when they feel like they’ve been lied to and get angry I figured I would ask fellow Vizzed members for advice. Any help that any of you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I am going to be getting a new PS3 hopefully over the weekend as a birthday present of sorts. I'm not very into those things. I haven't updated my infos, for lots of years, lol
Anyway, I'm sure there are members, who know more about this topic, so I'll move it to help forum, because I don't think that video games polls & crazyness is the best forum for it. By the way, good luck [moved to "Help / Question - Comment / Suggestion" forum] Anyway, I'm sure there are members, who know more about this topic, so I'll move it to help forum, because I don't think that video games polls & crazyness is the best forum for it. noelia : Thank you for the help… Yeah if this were twenty years ago I wouldn’t have a problem because systems back then saved games via cartridge and such. I have started looking on YouTube in the hope that I can find a tutorial or something along those lines because it looks like I will be doing this myself. I am too nice of a person to just let out anger unless I get provoked but, I felt like telling the guy I talked to from Best Buy that it is a shame that they don’t provide the service their website claims because they would have gotten close to $500 from me between the price of console, warranties and, the game data transfer.
The nice guy in me just said ok thank you very much and that was the end of it. I did get a chuckle over the fact that Best Buy is an electronics/gaming giant and here is an employee of theirs under the Geek Squad banner telling me to call a rival competing business. I guess the recession has suddenly made companies semi-honest. I wonder if that would work in regard to healthcare and we can actually cure something for once. Anyway, I am probably going to go tomorrow to buy the console with the PS Move so once all’s said and done it should be interesting to see how my reflexes are. Thanks again for moving this I appreciate it. The nice guy in me just said ok thank you very much and that was the end of it. You can use the back up utility To completely copy paste (more like overwrite)everything from your old hard drive (which i assume I had less space) onto the new one which can fit that and more).
or if you just want you game progress, save game files, game profiles, copy all the Saved Data Utility stuff. Put all of this on any external hard drive or flash drive (make sure it can fit it). Right it used to be quite simple but Sony have actually made the process a right pain in the a*** to do now. You'll need a USB stick with the latest version of the firmware (currently 3.55) pre-loaded if you want to swap out the internal HDD for a bigger one, you can download this from Sony's official site, you'll need to put it into a folder named PS3 and another folder inside this one named updates or something (can be found on SOny's pages). Secondly you'll need an external hard drive to back up your data to using the backup facility. This external HDD needs to be formatted to Fat32 format. I'm not going to go through how you do that for PC's or Mac's because there are plenty of websites that'll tell you how to do that better than I could. step 1: Back up internal HDD onto external fat32 formatted HDD. step 2: switch out your old internal HDD for your new one (depending on model the screws etc are slightly different but really easy to do). step 3: Before turning PS3 back on put the USB drive in with the current firmware on. step 4: turn on PS3 format drive by following instructions then press start and select to search for media drive with latest firmware installed. step 5: If the firmware was found in step 4 you'll have to go through the set up of your PS3 once again. Once this is done you can go to back up utility and restore your old data from the back up. or if you just want you game progress, save game files, game profiles, copy all the Saved Data Utility stuff. UserMike : I was able to find a video on YouTube that showed me step by step what to do and it was actually a fairly simple transfer once I got everything working the way it was suppose to… I’m just happy that in a room that is normally a cluster and with very limited space that I was able to move a TV tray in to put my old ‘Phat†model on to do the transfer with my Slim. Once I had an Ethernet cable and had printed out step by step instructions from the video that I found on YouTube it was simple but took about an hour and a half.
The only downside which I can’t figure out why they took this out is the Slim doesn’t have PS2 compatibility despite that if you go on PSN’s Playstation store they have a PS2 compatibility tool that you can download free. It’s a bit deceiving if you ask me. I also purchased a vertical stand for my slim yesterday via EBay and supposedly with your console vertical it is suppose to let air flow better and reduce heat. Which will hopefully eliminate the chance of getting another YLOD. The big problem that led my “Phat†console to that was that I went a couple of years with little or no adequate air conditioning in my home. My brother in law was able to finally fix the problem which turned out to be a big gap in the tubing outside that was disconnected from the unit. Ironically my brother in law was able to accomplish what “Certified†AC technicians from two companies couldn’t even after endless phone calls and visits. So needless to say I am glad that I will be able to enjoy the summer this year without periodically considering going to a friend’s house or a motel just to get some air. I live in a home with no insulation so with little or no AC it was downright brutal because if it’s 85 to 90 degrees outside it felt like well over 100 in here which if you know how humid it is in Florida you know how brutal it can be. It's not just the Slim they took PS2 compatibility out of, it was all of them except for the first two versions that were released. Mainly they took it out of the system because of how much space the PS2 emulator took up. That's why the first two versions are really expensive even though they have the least amount of memory out of all of them.
