I've read that Other M is making Samus sound like an idiot. I have never played the game but there have been some seriously negative reviews based on the changes to her character.
I always imagine her as an intelligent, mildly arrogant and empathic person who is scarred by her past but strong enough to cope. I really hope they don't mess with her character too much.

I don't really think they are killing Samus off. The thing is that Nintendo hasn't really always treated that franchise well in the first place. For example there was no Metroid released for the N64.

I will say though that Samus' dialogue in Other M was horrible. Having her talk isn't the big issue for me, it was the horrible scrip and voiceover actress. In the next game they just need to have better writing and people won't complain so much.

Metroid Prime was the first Metroid game I played (and the earliest in the series I've ever played) so I can't speak for past games. I read a Game Informer review that gave me the impression that Other M contradicted Samus's personality.

Samus ends up working together with the crew, which makes sense. But, she decides to follow the orders of commanding officer Adam Malkovich. Although you supposedly begin Other M fully-powered, Samus will not use her variety of missiles, advanced guns, or armor upgrades until Malkovich authorizes it.

Samus often comes off as an idiot. After one supporting character has clearly established that the space station has been doing biological weapons tests, Samus asks, "Do you think they were doing biological weapons tests?"

I paraphrased some of it so I could boil it down and not get banned for spamming.

If half of that is true, then I would agree that they could be killing Samus if they don't get far away from Team Ninja (the developer). It described how bad the controls were designed too. Personally, this review convinced me that the game is not worth my time or money.

BNuge : You gotta take GI with a grain of salt; they've always been the harshest towards the Wii and I don't trust them on many Wii games for that... they also seem to have problems picking the right reviewers for each game (some being extremely biased for or against it). For instance, IGN loved the "clever" controls, and gave the game an 8.5. Look at the wider consensus instead of the sometimes-extremely-biased Game Informer.

I have to agree with the original post. I enjoyed the idea of samus narrating the story. And personally, I think the shell shock was a great addition. Especially if you consider the events of the Metroid series, it seems likely to me that she would have shell shock and it would present a particular problem fighting Ridley - one of or the only recurring boss in every game. I don't remember if there are others but I have definitely fought Ridley in every game.

All in all, I liked adding the Samus narration and, if nothing else, I think we can all agree that the Shell Shock was at least appropriate, given the history of Samus, particularly with Ridley.

jonny5 : My point is that they should have had a Metroid at launch of the N64 or shortly thereafter. I was pissed that they didn't. Especially with how great Super Metroid fans would have really loved a new Metroid for N64

I have not yet picked up my copy of Other M yet, but plan to. I just think that everyone critique bashed too heavily on it and scrutinized beyond belief, but then again, that is their job. I'm still not buying it though, Nintendo has yet to screw up a first party published title, and I don't think they are about to start.

I don't know if they are "ruining" Metroid, but I can tell you that I played some Metroid game at Best Buy and I didn't like it that much. The level of accuracy on finding plot-related bits and the general flow of the game just didn't set with me.
I do know that they've turned Samus into fan service by taking her out of the suit.

I feel that Nintendo is not killing but rather just giving us a new take on Samus, for those who don't like the new Samus should or can go back and play the older games if they missed out. Nintendo is also releasing older retro Samus on Virtual console for those who want the old school experience. In any case Samus is being kept alive, and going strong. Metroid Prime is a series I want to play sometime.

possibly, maybe they are running out of ideas for Samus or they are focusing on the other Nintendo games and pushed the metroid series aside for a while

the_casualty : sorry, but I can't stand it when ANYONE says a game doesn't need a story. Why the heck not? Great game + great story > Great game, anyone should be able to see that.

As for the topic at hand, Metriod was never a main focus for Nintendo. Samus was doomed from the start to take a back seat to Mario and Link. And with Reggie less and less willing to localize anything not from one of those to franchises, I have a funny feeling he'll turn down "Metriod Wii U".

Games absolutely need a story.

Game critics are biased against Nintendo because it's not the hit new Call of Duty or something like that.

Miyamoto said that he's putting Metroid in the back shelf of franchises for now.
