What are your thoughts on the movie A Clockwork Orange? I thought it was amazing, the plot was good, Malcolm McDowell was awesome as Alex, and I just loved the movie as a whole. Definitely one of my all-time favorites, even though I love basically all of Stanley Kubrick's movies that I've seen (except The Shining, that creeped me out too much ). I really want to read the book also.

I was disappointed by the last half hour, to tell you the truth. But overall, I definitely agree with you. That opening scene is brilliant! Something about it always gets me. Maybe it's the synthesized Purcell; I don't know. For something as simple as a couple of guys just sitting there as the camera zooms out and we listen to a mere voice-over, it was powerfully well done. I think it's the only Kubrick film I've seen (I ought to check some more out once I'm out of this Tarantino phase), but it's a masterpiece. I would recommend the book, even though I haven't gotten around to reading the last third yet. I thought for the first third, the movie did a better job; however, I enjoyed the second third of the book better than that part of the movie. Plus, you get to find out what happens to Pete in the book; the movie left me wondering.

I love how the intro to Conker's Bad Fur Day mirrors the opening scene... brilliant.

I've seen the movie and read the book - the two diverge quite a bit, and Burgess wasn't happy about the way the movie handled certain parts. In Kubrick's defense, he was working from an American edition of the novel, which left out a final chapter. Try to find a printing that contains that in order to get Burgess's full picture. (I'm trying to avoid spoilers here, just in case there are people that haven't seen it.) However, both raise the interesting question of whether 'forced' reform is really a good thing, and whether it can go too far.

One thing that was interesting in reading it was getting through the Nadsat jargon that Burgess made up for the narration. I had a friend who was studying Russian at the time, and she pointed out where most of the stranger words came from (droog = friend, moloko = milk, horrorshow = good). For about the first half of the book, I was flipping back and forth with the glossary in the back, but after a while, I found I didn't have to.

If I remember, it was banned in England for 25 years, have seen it several times now. The bodyguard of the guy in the wheelchair is Dave Prowes who played the physical part of Darth Vader.

It was - and on the request of Kubrick himself. Apparently, there were a number of copycat incidents, including one where the offenders sang 'Singin' in the Rain' during their crime. Kubrick himself was stalked by a deranged fan of the film. As a result, he withdrew it from distribution in theaters or on video. The ban lasted until his death.

Well I watched this movie in college (and I knew where a "magic mushroom" field was) So I really don't remember the actuall scenes, I remember very powerful imagery including 1 of 2 scenes I remember. It involved a penis the size of small car and I remember the ending and the thesis, u know the consequences of reform and whatnot.

On reflection and after drinking a little Milk Plus, I have to say the style of the film is great, the characters are great archetypes of our new polymorphic society and the soundtrack is stunning, even if it comes on those tiny little tapes.

I'd say this was deffiniately Kubrick's best film. The only one he's made that even comes close to it is Full Metal Jacket. The Shining made me physically ill. I thought it was terrible how he put two great actors like Shelley Duvall and Jack Nicholson in such a stinker of a movie.
Anyway. A Clockwork Orange scared me and not many movies have the capacity to scare me. (The Exorcist, The Poltergeist, and Last House on the Left are a few.) But there was only one part that scared me.

SPOILER!!!!! (scroll down)

The part when they broke into the house and Alex was singing 'Singing in the Rain' while he was peparing to rape the wife. That part gave me nigtmares. But it was so beautifully done. It really brought Alex's sinister nature to light.

Jmc, I don't know if you watch South Park, but last night's episode had a hilarious reference to A Clockwork Orange. Most of the episode was pretty drab, but I was cracking up laughing that entire scene.

I think one of the greatest parts about A Clockwork Orange is how reference-able it is. I mean, it had sooo many great scenes! I don't think the opening scene will ever get old for me. Plus, it has some great philosophical material to think about. I've brought it up a few times in my stupid Philosophy of Utopias class I'm taking, about conditioning and what-have-it.

This is the scene I was talking about: http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/360438/trust-my-coon-sense

I would have to say, A clockwork orange is a great film, defiantly in my top 50 movies for sure. And Full metal jacket as well. I will say, some parts of the movie do seem to go slow and drag on. But overall i would rate it a 9/10. If you haven't seen it defiantly check it out. If you need a link say so in here and i will get one for you real fast.
