I've tried a few anti-viruses(norton, esset nod32, avg and avast pro). Among them Avast is the best, it "saved" me lots of times, while I was surfing, by blocking the connection with "bad" sites. Also, it doesn't make my laptop "slow", at all!
So, if I were you, I would pick avast for sure

I use AVG and so far have had no problems. But the best anti-virus out there is being smart on the internet and not going places or using things that are suspicious.... no anti-virus can replace being smart on the internet.

I said "Other" because it varies. Around 3 years ago, AVG was the best. A year or two ago, Avast was the best. Now AVG is the best. Viruses, etc. are always evolving so the antivirus programs must improve at the same rate. Sometimes, AVG ends up more advanced. Other times, Avast is ahead.

I have always been a big fan of AVG. That program has never led me wrong. I never have to be worried about viruses or anything else while using AVG. I have it on both computers I own. It works well without being too intrusive.

I have used each Avast and AVG, and I must say I prefered avast, but now use avira. Its always best to be careful though. I also scan with MBAM

I've downloaded the free versions of both Avast and AVG...and in my opinion AVG works best.

It immediately blocked pop ups, spam and countered lots of potential virus and spyware threats. Avast didn't seem to do anything. Unless my computer was in perfect condition at that time....

I have never used Avast and to be honest Ive never heard of it xD, however i use AVG everyday and it has always done the job for me, my brother suggested AVG when i got my first computer an dive used it ever since.

Though I no longer use either both are good, but it's not enough to just use one of those and be completely safe, u either need firewall, malware, and maybe even another anti virus (setup in such a way so they dont conflict) to cross check. Both are good, however as I stated before, I use Avira.
