Leshanah tovah tikateiv veteichateim!

May you be blessed with a good year. And may G-d shine on you and yours!

I've heard of Rosh Hashanah before, but don't know anything about it. What do you do for this holiday and what's it about?

Rosh Hashanah is the Celebration of the new year for our religious calender and also a time to praise G-d for creating the world. Its also known as the celebration of the birthday of Adam and Eve.

So is it like a regular new years party with everyone counting down or something, or do you guys do something else? And I've never seen it written G-d before, I thought it was Yahweh that was the Jewish name of god. I've never really learned or heard much about Judaism, so I'm really interested, LOL

That is the name of G-d but we are not supposed to say his name. And because of the lake of vowels in Hewbrew when using the world God, we leave out the O in honor of ancient language.

And no its not like new years eve or anything, its two days spent with family, some fast till night fall, the less traditional of us just move back to Kosher foods, and we also have many symbolic foods we eat such as apples dipped in honey which are supposed to help guild us in to a 'sweet' new year.

Most of the day is spent in contemplation a pray though. Its not the most fun of our holidays but it is one of the most important.

Oh yes and when we meet each other we say "Leshansh tovah tikateiv veteichateim!" Which basiclly means. "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." A blessing that G-d will watch over you and your family kindly.

That sounds a lot nicer than getting a whole bunch of people as drunk as possible just waiting for a certain time, lol. Do you still celebrate the common calendar new year, or is it just like any other day? I know some of my Chinese friends who only celebrate Chinese new year, and don't look at December 31st as a special day, so I'm wondering if you're the same.

Yeah my family does, I know some of the religous families don't celebrate the secular holidays but I do. I also celebrate Christmas because my father is Catholic. My mother was Jewish.

Did you get Christmas and Hanukkah presents then? That would be so awesome, to get a load of presents on Christmas and also presents for every day of Hanukkah.

Well, before some mod gets mad at me for too much back and forth on one thread, I'll stop posting. Thanks for all the info though, I learned a lot today

Well yeah it sounds great now but my Hanukkah gifts always stunk. Lol but Christmas was always fun. haha. When you get seven gifts they tend to be small trinkets. Some have important value to me. Others, Not so much.

this thread right here is why I wish we had a general religion forum. I've learned more about Rosh Hashanah than I ever knew before because someone posted about it here and someone else wanted to know more.

I agree with Btowns that this sounds like a much better way to spend "new years" than what most people do.

bvd1022 : Thank you and you are vary welcome, and I hope your year (though it may not start for a few months still) is wonderful for you!

geeogree : I've always been fond of it, but I do have to admit that I do enjoy a beer on New Years Eve XD

Namrea : well, having 1 or 2 drinks isn't a big deal. I've never had a problem with friends ( or friends parents) who have a glass of wine, or a beer at the end of the day. That's how some people relax.

I'm talking about the people who get totally hammered to the point where they have basically no ability to make sound judgments at all.

One of my friends was not at school because of a religious holiday today. It's cool that I know what holiday he was celebrating.
