I know many of you don't believe in evolution, but think about this...

Are we devolving? I mean... I'm pretty sure that many of you believe that humans used to hunt for a living, so over the period of time hasn't our senses been dulled from lack of use? I mean, take a look at how many people wear glasses today... How many old people need hearing aids as they age?

What do you think?

Are we devolving?

I don't think we are devolving, we may be losing some primal instinct but we are gaining intelligence and quality of life.

Yeah we are... some point in the future humans will be pointless objects and machines will do most the work. In terms of music and movies I think we took a major step backwards just nothing what they use to be

And vizzed itself is devolving we are going back in time to play retro games instead of playing xbox 360 or wii lol.

Although those might seem like evolution they can also be considered devolution depending on how you look at it ¬_¬

Well Evolution is the changing of inherited traits through generations to adapt to a new environment. That being said, I think devolve would mean going back to an earlier stage in our development? I don't think it works that way. Change is good in evolution for the current environment. If we're being lazier, less creative, or whatever, that just means that those characteristics are not needed as much anymore. The way the world is today (for much of us at least) it is not as physically needing of us anymore. We're adapting to a new way of life I guess.

I think it depends on what you would think devolving would mean.. if you think its about not being able to hunt or gather for our own survival then yes. But this could also be considered evolution by some people.

Our reliance on our technology means that we no longer need to use our keen senses for hunting and the like. The increase in loss of vision, hearing, etc may be the result of incomplete documentation or other factors such as loud noises and artificial light from machines, among other things. I guess we are mostly just out of practice. I don't think "devolve" is backwards evolution, but rather evolution in an undesired or counterproductive direction.

JigSaw : The exact point in which humans will devolve is when a veldt like machine will be built since 85-90% of the human race will stop with any sorrow or boredom they have and live without any troubles.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream had the theory of the human race being extinct if a supercomputer was built to defend for a nuclear holocaust and it would eventually get the emotions if a human and get negative feelings and blow up the world. An interesting theory.

it's hard to say whether things are getting better or worse.

In terms of humanities overall power in the world I would say we are still evolving. We used to be lower on the food chain and now we're at the top of all of them

We also live about 50 years longer than we used to 500 years ago. If you hit 50 and saw your grandchildren grow up a bit you were pretty old. Now if you don't make it to 70 you died young.

Humans have also done things that no other species has done on this planet. We've adapted to live in every single location on the planet (except underwater, but mostly only because of the cost of doing so.... we could do it if we wanted to).

So, I don't think we're devolving so much as we've given up things we don't need as much anymore.... being able to kill something with a spear is no longer needed

Not devolving, I'd say more accurately that we're getting lazier with the constantly advancing tech.

Have you ever bought a pair of jeans and you just loved them? (Go with me on this, this is not spam I have a point). They were your favourite pair of jeans and you loved to wear them every moment you could because they looked so great. we all have I think. But after a while, wearing them so much wore them out. They became faded and torn, and yeah we even liked that aged look for a while but eventually they became so torn and ripped that we could not longer get any use out of them so we threw them away.

Have you ever purchased a pair of jeans that did the opposite? Have you ever seen a pair of jeans get newer and repair with time? No. Not likely. I will give you 100 Viz if you have a pair of jeans like this. My point is, what is it that causes them to break down and come into a state of disrepair? Entropy. It's simple. The entire universe is subject to the laws of physics and also of thermodynamics; entropy (paraphrase of the 2nd of 3 laws of thermodynamics). Everything is in a constant state of down-spiralling and decay. Eventually it will all come to ruin. Why? Well we let it into the world with sin. But the good news is when this world ends a new one will come. A better one that never decays. One that God intended. That's what I think. Any thoughts on this?

I think it would take a couple hundred more years to have hard evidence we are devolving. I just hope it doesn't get to this point.

Since there is so little in the way of challenges for us, almost everyone is surviving and replicating. This means that every variation, both good and bad, are continuing. Unless the mutation is bad in an extreme way(life threatening or too disfiguring to be attractive to the opposite sex), it continues on.

In some places, such as Africa, where food is in short supply I could see them still evolving in beneficial ways. Those who best survive in harsh conditions live to breed, and those who do not do so well die. In this case I still see evolution moving forwards.

Basically I wouldn't say we are doing either really. We have simply gotten to the point were all mutations are allowed to exist, both "good" and "bad". We are not devolving as a species, simply stagnating.

I think we're peeing in the gene pool a little. Weak, unintelligent, disease prone people are able to survive and reproduce because of the excess we possess. We're not devolving just yet, turning back into some kind of primate, but we are becoming dependent upon our medical technologies to survive. I agree with flamingfuzzy, we're stagnating, not improving.
