Last night my PS3 decided to turn off and never work again Y.L.O.D. style and before anybody says no I was not playing FFXIII.

I decided to fix the problem since my warranty has ran out, so there I was thinking that it will be back in action in no time. I had noticed the board was a strange colour but did not think anything of it I also noticed the solder was a bit rough so that was sent to be flooded, cleaned and redone still no luck so I have give up a new one will be bought as soon as possible instead of wasting resources.

Gutted!

So the current tally is 4 360's and 1 PS3 cream crackered.

Any uplifting comments or similar stories would be appreciated to soften the blow of losing yet another console to possible bad craftsmanship.

It might not even been the system. A few things to check/answer

Is where you keep your systems warm/hot? If so... bad news!
Is where you keep your systems humid? If so... again bad news (YLOD can be cause by moisture on the heat sinks or something like that)
Have you checked your wall outlet to make sure your system is receiving relatively "clean" power (i.e. the correct voltage is coming out)? Do you have a line conditioner or UPS you could use? (Crappy power can kill electronics faster than shotty workmanship or lemons).

I would check that stuff first. For checking your outlet you'd need a voltage meter that can handle above whatever voltage should be coming out of your wall.

I have checked my socket with a insulation continuity tester and all is normal. With regards to my PS3 it is in my living room where there is minimal humidity it is also well ventilated, I also followed trusted advice that stated under no circumstances should you lie your PS3 flat as the PlayStation's base will heat up causing the internal fan to work harder.

NOOOO!!!!!! How horrible! poor PS3. Well.. I used to love the PS3 it was awesom....but then I went threw four 360's and found i like it alot more..

So while I feel the saddness for you ps3,I cant help but say, you can find better then a PS3 easy, or even get one of the newer PS3's.

2 GAME BOY ADVANCE SP
and 1 GAME BOY COLOR.

although i wasn't the one to break those ps2's
yeah that really stinks. the ps3 is great, and horrible when it breaks. although I've never had a xbox [360] before so i cant say anything about that.

It happens to the best of us. I had to re-buy my Xbox 360 because of a system failure. It sucked but you'll get over it in a month or so.

I too am an owner of a PS3, it could have been possible that other people could have been messing with it while your gone or something like that. Usually when I'm done playing my PS3 I turn it completely off, I really don't know if you do that or not though. Sorry for your lost, it looks like it couldn't be helped.

Cloudsnakeskin : I took my PS3 to a service center this morning and the guy basically said that although it can be fixed more and more consoles are having this problem. I haven’t been able to access my PS3 since May so you can imagine how irritated that made me. The place I took it to has a good reputation so I am hoping that they will be able to solve the problem on the first go.

If not and it happens again I will send my console to Sony but not before giving them hell first. I have a backwards compatible 80Gb console and since I’ve heard that Sony did away with backwards compatibility I am reluctant to invest in a newer model. Most troublesome is that I paid $600 for my console (Got it when it was first released) and maybe it’s the disgruntled consumer in me but I think for the price tag the hardware on the inside should be top notch and where this doesn’t happen.

I will wait and see what happens I should have my console back today so I’m hoping for the best. I hope your situation gets resolved. What I would do is research and see if there is a service center in your area, if so at the very least you’ll be able to get what ever game was in the drive back. I have heard that Sony is offering new extended service plans so I am probably going to check that out assuming that everything comes out well. At least that way if it happens again I’ll have a multiple year service plan and they can fit the bill for any problems.

I’ll let you know how it works out once I know… Best of luck to you.

Cloudsnakeskin : Well I got it back at about two o’clock this afternoon and booted it up briefly… I was able to access my PSN account and Vizzed however, the fan was making far too much noise for my liking and after I put my copy of Fight Night 4 back in the console it almost did the same thing.

I was able to get it out this time but I am going to wait a little while and let it sit for a while because it did sit in my father’s car and it is humid out so I figure maybe after it gets acclimated to room temperature for a couple of hours if not the rest of the night and see what happens.

From what I could tell the hard drive was as is and had my two downloaded games from PSN. I was able to download the last system update and I even downloaded the PS2 compatibility add on as a test though this is a backwards compatible console.

I wish someone would tell me if the rumors of no backwards compatibility on the Slim models are true.

It seems like a dis-service to the consumer to take out something that allows access to three versions of Playstation games. From what I know I don’t think PS2 is manufacturing anymore, you’d think they’d want to keep people happy by letting them utilize all their PS equipment on one console.

You would think both Sony and Microsoft would take the drawbacks of each console and make sure it doesn’t happen especially if they plan on releasing a PS 4 or new Xbox console in the future.

Remember high powered corporations the ultimate Zen master was, is and, will always be the consumer. Just ask Sega… Once one of the two top consoles in the world now nothing more than a game maker for the two major consoles.
