i found an old hp windows xp laptop in my closet and it wont start windows, when i turn it on it brings up a screen that say
start windows normally
safe mode
safe mode with network

i tried all of them and start windows normally brings up a black screen
and the 2 safe modes bring up a bunch of file names and i cant do anything with them

so if you have any ideas please help me out i could really use that extra laptop

any chance you have a windows xp install disk lying around anywhere? You will likely get a lot further with that it sounds like. At least with that you can run diagnostics to see what the problem might be.
