Problem with Internet IP gaming...

So, I wanted to play Age of Empires II with my cousin, who lives in a completely different state than me. But, I figured since it's a Internet TCP/IP connection, it shouldn't matter since it's not an LAN connection or something.
Note: I'm not really good at this whole connection type stuff so, if I'm not making any sense, if I'm just being plain stupid, or if something I'm saying isn't in order, please tell me lol.
But anyway, we turned off the firewall temporarily so that we could play and everything, and for some reason he wasn't able to join my game. But then when I tried it with my brother at my house, it worked.
So, is it just because of the distance from me to my cousin or is it something else?

I dont think this is a distance problem, I am in TN and have played in GMod servers in Europe, so i think there is a different reason. are all the ports forwarded? can u join other games?

metal572 : Well see, AoE II is a very old game. They already shut down the Internet server type stuff. The only thing that remains is the TCP/IP connection for DirectPlay or LAN DirectPlay. So, there's isn't any other games out there because I had to exchange IP addresses with my cousin in order to play.

Did you give him your internal IP address or your external one?
Go to a site like http://www.whatsmyip.org/ to find your external address.

Then quit and go see what http://www.whatsmyip.org/ says is your IP.
They are probably going to say different things as the game would have been telling you your LAN settings rather then external settings.
Also just check that that particular game can be played over the internet.
