Earlier today, around 2 p.m., I went skydiving for the first time! Someone from the other board I go to, LS2.com, was in the area for training at his job. He put up a thread a few days ago inviting anyone to meet up with him. I was only one available/with enough balls to do. I got there around 12:50 and signed the 5 page waiver. He shows up a little later (had a reserved time at 2). Here's my post from that thread in its entirety:

Yeah, definitely had fun. It was a very strong "holy shiite I can't believe I'm doing this!" first time experience. Flight suits looked a little funny, but as long as they were meant to keep me safe it was all good. We both had our own instructor, probably because we had to maneuver differently in the plane, which by the way was cramped as hell. I was sitting up against the control panel in the front, I was wondering if I would accidentally hit or press up against a knob or button that would threaten our lives. Our ascent was kind of long- 15 minutes to reach 10k ft. I almost fell asleep half way up.

When we prepared to jump I turned around and the instructor latched himself to my harness. The door opened and he wasn't kidding when he said the wind will kind of suck you out. I felt a strong pull on my side and was afraid I was going to fly right out. The guy put his foot on the step outside, told me to put my foot next to his and then 1.....2......3! Out we went. For the next 40-50 seconds it was-

Falrfhgalghglfhlgrlflaalflgrlarlgaflgralafflahglhrlafhghlrlahgrlfhrlahgrlfhlgrhlhglralflglahfhgrlgrlhafhgrlhghrlalalhgrlalghhgflflhfhrghrlhahgrlalgh

laflgharglhflaflhrfflrhghrrrlghalalghlgalaalgllhlrrghrgl

Man, it was pretty amazing, though. Being so high up and looking around and at the horizon was damn cool. Even when I was falling I couldn't see the ground getting closer. In fact no point of reference was moving for a while. All I felt was a lot of wind from underneath. It was as if we were staying in one spot and not moving anywhere. Finally felt a hard jerk after some time. The chute had been deployed and we floated down for the next 5 minutes. The part that sucked about that was the hard turns. There were so many strong Gs and negative Gs that my stomach got woozy. Had we parachuted for 10 minutes instead of 5 I most likely would have thrown up. And I suppose it would have been cool to watch a stream of puke spiral down to the ground from 1000 feet up.

So, we finally landed at the site, but there was a patch of FAIL on the ground we hit and we both fell on our asses. Nathan and his instructor managed to land on some WIN, though. Afterward Nathan and I hung around for bit and put down a couple cold ones available to us under the pavilion at the landing site. I'm not sure about him, but I was sort of waiting for this cute girl (who was with us but had gone up after we did) to land. She was cute and had a nice body, but there was a bit of ditsy-ness to her personality. I don't think she could have been more than 19 or 20. She went for the first time today, too, and loved it. Managed to get a couple shots of her without being obvious about it. :secret:

I had a blast. Thanks again, Nathan, for the invite. :yup: The rest of you should go skydiving at least once in your life. You'll love it.

It cost $200. It's a lot of money, but well worth your first time. On the plus side, we got have free beer on tap outside by the landing area. A bit dark, so I don't what it was, but it was good. If any of you guys get the chance to sky dive do so. Do it at least once in your life. You'll love it.

Even a day later I still find it hard to believe that I did something like that. I wonder if the feeling will ever settle in. As for the plane it was a Cessna, but I can't remember what model. I remember as I was falling the only feeling I had was disbelief. I wasn't even nervous or scared. There was no point because there was nothing I could to save myself if something went wrong. I had to rely on the instructor attached to me. Besides that, the sky and ground are moving so slow it gives you the illusion that you're not falling at an incredible speed, but rather slow enough that if you did hit you would be able to land fine.

It was...weird. But fantastic.

Here's the site for the place.

Skydiving seems fun. I've wanted to do it for the longest time, but i feel i want to wait till im a bit older first.

But on a related note, my Grandma went into a Zero-G flight. It was a real live simulation of space. They traveled really fast upwards then quickly down, letting them stay in Zero-G's for a while. THat is something i want to do to. It is like skydiving but different. So you didn't feel the pressures until after the parachute was deployed?

Skydiving sounds fun, but I have issues with freefall. It's just complete helplessness. The only control you have is the parachute and once you open it, you are subject to the whims of the wind. I probably will go someday though. I'm 20, so I have time.

It doesn't really feel like like. There's almost a atmosphere of serenity about you as you're falling- you're no where near any physical object and it's like you can move where ever you want (not literally). So much open space. You're virtually free of any solid thing and you're so high up you can see everything in every direction for miles and miles. It's a nice feeling.

Cyro Xero : Sweeeeeeet! I'm jealous! I'm an adrenaline junkie myself! I've climbed a mountain a few times but never skydived! I must put that on my "things to do" list immediately!

Dude that is awesome! It must have been an amazing experience. I have thought about going skydiving but I can just never get myself to do it. I'm not sure why exactly that is either. I'm not scared of heights, and I'm not scared of planes so I can't really put my finger on it.

I have spoken to a few people that I know that have done it. They all said that they were crazy scared, but once it was over they said it was one of the most amazing things they have done in their lives.
