I've been wondering this for some time now, as I would rather listen to my iTunes than the 8-bit loops of most games. I use Mozilla Firefox, by the way.

It depends on what you are playing with, some things have sound controls, others dont.
For example- When using NESCafe Java Emulator press the "S" key on your keyboard to disable all sounds.
When using the RGR plugin to play the Nes you can't disable sounds in game.
But when using the RGR plugin to play the Snes you can disable sounds in the menu (Esc > Config > Sound > uncheck sound box).
so yeah, it all depends really.

If you have certain versions of Windows you can use the sound mixer to disable all sounds from the internet browser.
That might be your best option for some cases.
