I don't use an external hard drive, since I only back up some important files(they're mostly word and ppt files) for my university courses in cds by the end of every semester.
During every semester, I just transfer them from my laptop(I usually work with it now) and keep a copy in my PC, which I rarely use it anymore.

I'm gonna try to get a TB hard drive myself over the summer. However I currently don't back my computer up. I do back up my important files for classes on a site called dropbox, though. It only gives something like 4 GB free, but it's better than nothing.

I've never backed up my computer at all actually. Although there has been a couple times that I wish I had, I don't keep anything really valuable on my computer because of the chance of it being gone for good. Once I buy a new/ less piece of trash computer, I will try and regularily back it up.
