So, this October marks my dear boyfriend's 30th year on earth and the last birthday he spends in California with his friends before moving to the other side of the country. My evil plan, formulated and carried out over the last several months, has been to have all our friends chip in to get him an authentic San Jose Sharks third jersey. For months I have been moving on this plan by casually talking about getting jerseys once we move to Pennsylvania and what we want. In the last week I have stepped this up, and on Monday we are going to a store to try on jerseys to find out what size we wear. How am I doing this without him catching on?
1)It's three months until his birthday
2)He has a bad memory for things that are not slights against him
3)The Penguins are playing in the Winter Classic, and there was just a press release
4)He has long acknowledged that my hockey fandom far surpasses his
So, I disguise it all with excitement about the idea of getting MYSELF a Penguins jersey, talking about how I would like one and debating if it would be cheaper to buy it once we move out there or ordering it online. As far as this store goes, they have my jersey I want on sale but they don't have his, so I remarked that they were lame and we'd just have to wait for them to go on sale since we can't afford $300 on a pair of jerseys right now... but hey, at least we can find out what size we wear and look for ice skates.
What he doesn't know is that as of Monday I put my plan into action, messaging several friends on Facebook and asking others in person if they want to chip in to get him a jersey. I listed prices of the replicas and authentics, customized and not, and in the span of a few hours have collected $420 including 50 from myself to get him a customized authentic third jersey from the NHL store (because they are having a sale of sorts, 50% of s&h). I am now waiting on a reply from the store as to if they will let me do a custom order with Evgeni Nabokov's name and number on the jersey even though he just left the team, technically it doesn't violate their rules so I am hoping they let me, otherwise I will hunt on ebay or go with a personal customization. Or get him a normal one and a hat or something, I dunno. He has mentioned before not really liking the idea of putting his own name on the jersey, but has a periodic liking for it, so I am going to bring it up in the idea of customizing my own and mentioning what he has said in the past.
So yes, thus is my cunning plan. I am quite pleased with myself, and since I cannot gush to many people about it I am sharing it with you.
