AVG Free is certainly a good option, alot of people use it and it works well.

You can also try Avast! from http://www.avast.com/
It comes as a 30 day trial, but you can register for free to get a one year license.
Then you just register for free each year for your free licensed copy.
I know most people either recommened AVG or Avast! so you should be in good hands with either one.

For a third option, another that is available is the free version of Avira at http://www.free-av.com/
