The work experience I have is either construction or labor oriented. I've been laid-off my last job and am going to school for a specific vocation but I need work. I don't have any experience in restaurants or retail or anything else so I'm going to apply at a video game buy-sell-trade store.

If I tell them that I have been playing video games habitually for 20 years and I have a general knowledge of video games and their accessories, is this the right approach or can you give me feedback of how else to advertise my qualifications? Also, if I need to continually bug them for availability, how should I go about it?

I think telling them that you have a strong working knowledge of video games both past and present and that you are actively paying attention to what is new and what not that that is a positive thing... but shouldn't be your main focus.

You want to put forward the generally "good" traits as well.... hard working, honest, reliable, etc. Sure, getting the person who is hiring you talking about the games you like and being really personable will help... but don't focus solely on that.

well, it's also a tough economy. I've been going through the same thing with my job search. I've had maybe 3 interviews in the last year. It's -tough-.

The job is retail though so make yourself as friendly seeming as possibly. Dress nicely when you go, but not over the top. It's not an office job or anything....

There is only so much you can do... but do it all if you can. Anything that will get them to consider you that one extra time more than the other people.
