I like Pokemon that have great stats.  But also Pokemon that can work well in a battle and can work with other Pokemon.  If they can all work together, I think the Pokemon are better for it.

I look for good stats and awesome moves. If the pokemon can use a move that's crazy strong and I've never seen before...it earns my respect. .it never hurts to look awesome either.

A Pokémon has to have great stats or they are useless. It doesn't matter how good their move pool is, How awesome they look, or how great their type match up is... If they have mediocre stats then they will never be a champion and will always be out gunned in the long run. It is true that all great Pokemon have to have an awesome move pool, but without the stats to back up the awesome moves, thats all the moves will ever be just plane old moves.

As for types, I choose types that go well against gym leaders. Another thing I look for is design. I'm a fan of cute Pokemon like eevee and vulpix though I also like the cool Pokemon like Samurott. I would usually train a Pokemon that appeals to me, so i wouldn't be going around, training a bunch of Garbodor or Muk because they don't look that great to me (one's a bunch of disgusting stuff that I don't need to know, the other is gooey stuff).

I'm a weirdo with Pokemon, as when I am playing through it, I give my character a personality and catch Pokemon that they would like/want based off of that. I guess you could say I RP it. If I make a character that likes fishing, they'll have mostly water types. If I make the general 'catch em all' character, they'll use whatever they have that's good for the situation. Stuff like that.

When playing pokemon I want a pokemon that looks cool/badass. Something like Salamace, Houndoom, Arcanine, Swampart, Charzard are all some of my favorite pokemon because they are cool looking. Stats and moves are important also, but I can always select another similar pokemon that has better stats or use TMs/HMs to give him better moves; but all that doesn't matter if my pokemon doesn't look badass using Flamethrower, Hydro Pump, Fire Blast, Outrage, or Muddy Water.
