There is a glitch in that hiding spot. If you sucked through the straw water would come in as well as air so you barely get any air or maybe none at all. I would find an old mine that was not in user for a long time and hide there. I would also set up my base there.

The furnace room in my basement has a tunnel leading to a bomb shelter almost 100ft. underground. My grandparents made it, evidently, and only myself and my parents know about it. I call it my apocalypse safe room, just in case I happen to be alive during the end of the world. ^^;; (unlikely)

Hiding turns you into a sittin duck for the bloodhounds to sniff out. You want to pick several hiding places and constantly move between them. For best results, make sure there's no connection between them.

I bet one could last a while by putting on tattered clothes, dirtying up their faces a bit, and hanging out with the homeless people in their local city. Nobody would expect a wanted criminal to hang out with a lot of people. Of course, the trick to this would be making sure your face isn't too recognizable.
