I started this thread to talk about game hacks and how one makes them. I haven't made one before, though, so I wonder how I can make them.

Well you have to download a full emulator then get the game you want to hack, most people these days make Super Mario World Hacks, and if you search up mario hacks there is a really good one called www.smwcentral.net which gives you all you need to make one and a few extra stuff, they even include custom sprites, backgrounds, and enemies to help you out. Hope this helps at all sense I am not a hacker.

Deathzagamon : Actually... SMW isn't nearly as prevalent in the hacking community as Pokemon games, especially the GBA series.
Also, you do realize there's a ROM hacking forum, right Poke Power? I'll go ahead and move this there for you.

bigNATE : the thing is, i want to make a hack of pokemon leaf green with legendary starters, and to where someone can find any pokemon anywhere at anytime, and i dont know the emulator i need for it

A site with alot of good guides and programs for rom hacking (making game hacks) is http://www.romhacking.net/

Some of the guides on this page (CLICK ME) should be of great help.

The guide "Hacking Wild Pokemon Encounters" should definately give you some pointers to get started and you should find enough useful info in the other guides to figure out how to hack the starters in most pokemon games.

pokepower101 : Well, the emulator you would need is VBA, VisualBoyAdvance, and can be found at Get-Your-Rom.com, David's ROM site.
As for hacking tools, an extensive library of all you'll need can be found in the ROM Hacking section of The PokeCommunity forums.

It's ok, just cause you dont get something at first doesnt mean you're stupid.
If you dont understand something, start from the very beginning.

That should help get you started on your journey, and maybe then the other guides will start to make more sense.
Rom hacking can be very complex as you have to edit data itself, so there's no quick and easy way to just make it do what you want.

Most of the tools you will need will be found on sites like that one I linked to, you just go to a page like this http://www.romhacking.net/utils/ and type (for example) hex editor in the search box (if you need a hex editor).
The best emulator to play leaf green is VisualBoyAdvance, found on getyourom like bigNATE said, but here's a direct link to the download.

Just click that, wait 25 seconds and at the bottom of the page will be a yellow button that says DOWNLOAD!
Click that to download the emulator.
If you dont have it you will probally also need a leaf green rom file, you can get it from the link below (if you dont have it that is).

im trying to open the file for it now, and every time i try, it just says windows cant open it. i hate having unreplaceable bad luck, and this is why

pokepower101 : What you may need is 7 zip. it can be downloaded from here http://www.7-zip.org/download.html download either the first one (which should says .EXE under type) or the second one (which would say .msi) (if u have 32 bit windows get the first, if u have 64 bit get the second). run the installer and after u finish u should be able to right click the file,go to 7zip in the menu tht comes up,then click on extract. hope that helps.

I'm trying to think of the best way to describe things.
Lets see...

Go to the 7zip site, get the program.
Run the program and just keep clicking next until it is done.
Remember to accept the licence if it asks.
When it is installed, find the zip file, right click it with the mouse and select extract to extract it.
You might want to choose the extract to folder option of extract to "zip name here" option.
These options might be in a menu called 7zip when you right click the file.

Once it is done open the folder it made and you should find your files there.
If you still have bad luck with it one of us will probally try and find you a guide that explains "archives" and "extraction".

Maybe someone will be able to make a youtube video, there is probally one out there somewhere already as well.
