You know, I honestly think that he survived, but he was also "cloned"(it was more like... Shadow Androids if I remember correctly, except Shadow the Hedgehog wasn't such a good game.)
I think the whole "saga" of Shadow the Hedgehog spanning from SA2 to Shadow the Hedgehog was the deepest story SEGA could come up with for the Sonic series, but it wasn't really refined.

Shadow survived because I think that he can never die, really. In Sonic X, I think he "died" twice, but kept coming back.

Considering how most of the time video game characters don't "die". I mean if they did Bowser would be dead over 20 years ago when he fell in the lava, he's been beaten and if were in a real situation killed many times. So yeah if anything he survived.

He could have used chaos control to teleport away.
Sonic has done that himself to avoid death.

Well, technically in the video game universe you don't really die, as in if you get game over you can just play again, so I don't think the Shadow died. Even if he did, his awesome powers could smash the others (Umm, forget I said that).

See the thing is, he was never really "Cloned" He was sort of used as a basis to make these "Shadow Android" things seen at the end of the Team Dark story in Heroes and in Shadow the Hedgehog. He obviously survived. He wouldn't be in other games if it wasn't so.

Sega often doesn't spend too much time paying attention to detail, especially when it comes to the plots in their Sonic games. Besides, even if he did die and wasn't put in any future games, Sega would have just made 10 other stock characters to take his place.

Ok here is what happened. In SA2 in the final battle in the Last Story,we all see Shadow fall to his doom,demise,fiery death,etc. But we all see him back in Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic Heroes. It is in Shadow The Hedgehog in the Last Story where we learn what happened. It turns out that Prof.Eggman sent out a robot to retrieve Shadow during his free fall. He then had Shadow put in a capsule and in stasis,which we see in the beginning of the Dark Story of Sonic Heroes. So to clear everything up; the Shadow we play as is is the real Shadow.

Though even without that the best rule of thumb is that even if a character seems to be dead, unless you see them actually die they might be alive.

If i recall correctly it did indeed state that the explosion caused shadow to lose his memory in shadow the hedgehog. and in sonic heroes he is discovered in a tube which he was stored in after survived the explosion. Besides, wasn't shadow supposed to be a "ultimate life form"?
