Hey everyone

You probably heard of the oil spill at the Gulf of Mexico, which I heard was one of the worst environmental disasters in history. What do you guys think about it?

Tragic isn't really the word for it. Horrific, more like it.
It's bad, but it isn't the worst. It's just the worst that we've seen in a while, as the oil will stay in the soil and the marshes for a while, even after the oil rig is capped. So in a sense, it is a lot worse than Katrina and the like, but it isn't the worst in all of history. Look at the volcanic eruption on the island of Thera (date forgotten). It blew up an entire island, destroying both the inhabitants of Thera and the nearby Minoan civilization.
Hopefully we can get a way to cap the thing already, seeing as its been over a month. Ideas anyone? (my idea for dropping a giant brick of concrete on it didn't seem to work, and my second one involving Kyogre is just not plausible)

~sakura~ : Agreed, not the worst thing in history of course.
But still simply disgusting the mistakes and total disregard of all safety inspections and equipment. The anger wont hit until the oil starts to wash up on local beaches.

BlackFalconXF17 : I'm not too sure about that. There are plenty of really angry people in Louisiana right now, especially those in the fishing and sailing industries. There are some pretty angry senators from the affected states as well, and I don't think that people are just going to be happy when they walk outside into a puddle of oil. Right now, the general public isn't expressing much concern (that I know of. Please correct me if I'm wrong), but I agree. Once people start finding oil, they'll end up pretty mad.
Most of BP's attempts to stop the oil have failed miserably, and future plans make less sense than the idea of using Suicune and Kyogre. Its just a matter of time before the public gets angry though, and when they do...

BP is at fault for letting it happen (unless it was a terrorist attack). The government is at fault for not having the necessary equipment to deal with the problem. The environmentalists are at fault for pushing laws which force them to drill farther out, in the deeper water, making it harder to fix the problem when it occurred.

It was pretty terrible. But what I don't approve of, is people protesting against their local BP Gas stations. They aren't hurting BP, just the employees and the general manager of the store who had NOTHING to do with the disaster.

We need to sue the bastards. This burns me up as it is a direct violation of the responsibilities of BP. Instead of the CEO and the other higher ups getting million dollar bonuses, they should have been keeping an eye on their hazardous product. It was toyota slacking off and now it is bp. Those a**h***s make me sick.

They've said it is the worst. I'm suprised they haven't done anything that has slightely fixed the problem, and what are they gonna do about the oil that's already in the gulf?! Are they just gonna let it sit there?! Now, on a different subject on the matter. They haven't done anything for the victems of the explosion, they haven't sent a card, apology, nothing! Who do think they are that they can just let this happen, and just WALK AWAY! We need somebody, wether it be the president, BP, or somebody else to fix this problem!

I live in Florida so the oil spill has been every day news here since it happened. What bothers me about this whole thing is the affect that the spill is having on the economy down here even though we are not directly affected by the spill right now.

It also bothers me that some are choosing to criticize the president for the struggle of trying to resolve the problem instead of coming together as one with a united front to get the leak stopped and the clean up afterwards done.

It is hurricane season so I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I hope that they get it resolved soon incase god forbid a storm comes that might impact things. I would like to see some sort of restrictions on off shore drilling though after all of this.

There has to be some semblance of accountability with the oil companies especially when it appears as if they are the ones that are in a position to make money via several avenues and the small businesses and people that rely on the gulf to make a living are the ones that are suffering.

well, maybe the president should do more than simply finger point.... he's got vast resources available to him and the leak is still going... how about instead of debating the best course of action we get as many people and boats and equipment down there to deal with the problem.... and then charge BP with the cleanup bill.
