This has been going around a lot in school, special ed students are viewed differently than everyone else. Anyone know someone that is in special ed and/or any thoughts about this. I know like 4 special ed students and my thoughts about this is that it is messed up. Special ed kids are not different from everyone else except they need more help than the rest. I think that Special Ed students aren't that different from us.

I'm special ed Have been for as long as I can remember. I was put in there mainly cause I didn't give a crap about learning anything or never really paid attention I just was so bored. Thats normal for kids to judge. I actually feel sorry for the kids who didn't go to special ed they missed out on cool classes

xaphan : please tell me that you are kidding. Please (I'm hoping that was a serious jk? I don't even know)
I don't view special ed kids as any different from any other kids that I see. That is how I would want to be viewed and that is how I think they want to be viewed. The one thing that annoys me more than anything else is when people act as if special ed kids are different or aren't capable of speaking or understanding the English language and thus do not deserve the privilege of being spoken to face to face.
I have special ed kids in my school, and I know that they are some of the nicest people I have ever met. Granted, I am lucky enough that my school is filled with nice people, but I see no reason to treat special ed kids any differently than anyone else (unless, for example, a special ed kid with epilepsy. It is perfectly okay to warn him of flashing lights and stop and allow him time to take his medication or something)

Well he did say "jk"... I've never seen anyone use that and not mean it.

As to special ed kids, I really don't see why they should be treated badly. I mean yeah, there is a bit of an "they are different vibe" in obvious cases like down syndrome or autism but it is more because you don't know what to do or not do around them. The people that make fun of them for being "retarded" are the ones that should have that label applied to them in my opinion. So they learn differently, so what? Technically the GATE program is also special ed, but they don't get made fun of as bad do they? Well... I guess that depends on the school and how "nerd-tolerate" they are. My schools didn't pester us nerds too much, so I lucked out.

Our special ed class is need in that the students are there because they can't keep up with the normal classes. The only people in it are those with major learning disabilities. No one makes fun of the kids, they just feel sorry for them

my school had a special classroom that the special ed students used. It was number 59 so we called them 59'ers, but not in a good way. I admit I made fun of the special ed kids. I was young, immature and insecure. I felt better focusing negative attention at them than allowing anyone the time to focus on any fault or dysfunction I might have to be noticed.

Did I know it was wrong, sure. Do I know how much more wrong it is now that I'm older? For sure. But kids are that way. I think parents play a part in it. We (I say we because I'm a parent ) put labels on people and judge without putting too much thought into it. Kids are the great imitators and they follow suit in our judging.

special Ed doesn't matter in real life. If you can take care of yourself and anyone that depends on you, it doesn't matter. I mean, look at ex Pres Bush. he got all Ds in college and was the head of two corporations while they went bankrupt. He went on to become the President of the United States of America. he was a horrible President, but that is beside the subject.
