I didn't know the IP could tell you were they lived.

I'm not sure. What people do you want to get IPs from? People on your site? Or people you talk to on MSN?...

I'm not trying to get anybody's IP addresses or trying to lacate people Light Knight. I'm just wondering how are other websites or people find out your IP address and trace you. because i heard that your IP addreess tells people where your located at. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Both your computer and the server the website are on have to know the ip's of each in order to communicate. However you usually just see a website name instead of an ip because knowing the ip's of all your favorite sites would be tough

I know that there are some sites(proxy servers), which can help you to hide your reall IP(for exaple: www.hidemyass.com).
But I think that there is a problem when you want to log in your account. But I found it usefull some times

The IP address doesn't really tell them anything, but they can then use online tools to trace your IP.
There are lots of tools one can use to find where an address is, for example:
http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/
Mind you, tools like these won't give an exact location most times, you need a bit more work to do that.

To get an actual location that the IP belongs to at a specific time requires a subpeona served to the ISP. You can have some fun with the tracert command btw. It traces each jump along the way to that IP and often time the routers will have names reflecting the city or region it's located in.

IP addresses can be very misleading, my current one says I'm in San Diego... I don't even live in cali and not on a proxy either But you can find out someones IP with PHP.
