Lazlo Falconi : Thank you. That answers most of my questions. I had it about 60% figured out (so I was able to see what was missing a little easier), but I was missing the fact that I needed to stretch the part that the text was supposed to go in across to the sig and close that tag there.

This is the (very) basic layout I made with multiple tables--I'm only using basic colors right now, but now that I have a base code I can put in pics easily. The red table in the left is a placeholder for now... I actually want it to stick to the bottom of that table, but I couldn't get it to budge for whatever reason. I had all the tags closed, so I just left it there for now. I can figure that part out later. Thanks again!

Get ready for a big post yall (very sorry for this).

Lazlo Falconi :
the_casualty :

I'm going to test your HTML knowledge. Testing Lazlo because he seems to know a lot and testing cassy because he has an Ask Anything. And by "testing," I mean "asking for help because I'm not sure if this is possible." I'm willing to toss in some CSS if that's necessary. I'm using my previous layout just because it's already coded properly.

This one is ugly when it tiles-

This one scrolls instead of tiling-

But look what happens when the scrolling one doesn't have to scroll-

Edit by Lazlo: Use this one:

So here's the question. Is there any way for me to set a layout so that it starts out small (I usually set the minimum at 500px) and switches to scrolling after it stretches a certain amount? To rephrase. I want it to stretch as the post gets longer, but once it reaches the point where it would start tiling, it switches to scrolling. Not having that feature is the one part of these layouts that I don't like.

Obviously you would change out the numbers for whatever looks good, oh yeah, and that goes in the LAST container. Whatever is the last object in the header.

Lazlo Falconi :

I use a series of div tags. You're a mod of this forum, so you can click to Edit my post if you want to just check the code yourself and let me know where that code would go.

BNuge : Well I've edited your post a couple times to try getting it right and I can see why you were having trouble with it. You specify far too many heights, and I'll have to go through it and try to figure out where they all are and how to get things to display properly, which I don't really have time to do right now, sorry. I'll try to make time for it this weekend, though.

BNuge :

I have some advice, and maybe I can help you a little bit. But it looks like you used a couple divs and a table. Tables shouldn't be used for layouts at all, because they're insanely hard to work with and you can do everything with divs that you can with a table (tables make presenting tabular data easier, and that's really what they're supposed to be used for).

Anyway, this is only a crude attempt at recreating your layout sort of. I took your first two divs and combined them into one, since you don't need different elements to change the background image and color. Then I used a div for the actual text box. You should be able to move it around easily and get a better idea of what to do with this, than you would from your own code, though. And to make it easier to see what your changes do exactly, you could add borders to your divs.

That was just some advice I have. I think it should help a lot. The reason I never knew how to make layouts on here before was that everyone who had showed me their code had been using nested tables. So I assume this might help you. Sorry if it doesn't, but here's what I came up with.

A couple things to note: At the moment your layout doesn't expand with the text box. You'll see that when you try to expand the text. I'm not sure how to fix this right now and I have to go to class. But I can check it out when I get out.

I made a thread about this but Requiemhaunt suggesting posting it here..

Im reviving my guffsworld website and Instead of just developing one style of site, im developing two.. mostly so I have a choice but on the off-chance If I can combine the both in the end; it may turn out better.  Im stuck on developing my second style....

I have a very very limited knowledge of html and I need some help.  Im having a standard Index with news and links (links to other sections of the site like emulators, roms, downloads etc..) and when someone clicks on a link I want it to open in a new window which is fixed at say 700x700.  This is my first bit of coding I need help on.

The second is when these windows open, I want a transparent text box which has a scroll bar on the side; in the middle of this new fixed window.  Basically I want to have the fixed window display everything without having to scroll down the entire window.

Im going for a graphics-strong approach with this site as you may have gathered.  Any help is greatly appreciated, thank-you.

onload="changeScreenSize(500,300)"

This should make the page resize automatically when loaded. So your body tag should look like this:

I have a quick question regarding CSS on profiles.

What code would I have to post on my bio to add a background picture?

I've actually tried my old code which doesn't really work anymore, that or I'm just missing something =P

hackerman : In your bio, add the following:

I've added how to change your links too, since I know that was going to be your next question. Replaced HEXHEX with the Hexadecimal value of the color you want (Not too important for background, but it should be similar to your images color.

You can also add a:hover, a:active, and a:visited in the same style as the regular a tag.

hackerman : No, just doing

a { color: #HEXHEX; } will change all of them. Remember that you need the number sign before your color-code. alink isn't anything, I think you're getting a (All anchor tags) and a:hover (et al) confused. If you want to change a single link, you need to write the tag (This means this won't work for profile links--they're all or nothing) http://url" style="color:#HEXHEX;">This is a link

But again, this won't let you change the links that already appear on your profile, they all have to have the same color.

Okay, you have to change #HEXHEX to the color of your choice. Clicke here and choose your color, then copy your the number that appears at the top and paste it over HEXHEX (Leave the # sign). Then upload an image that you want to use as the background, and copy the URL that it gives you. Replace http://url with that (But leave the 'quote marks').

Also, your "a" code is messed up, it needs to have a semicolon ( after color: #HEXHEX;

I need help for one thing. Sorry for bumping this thread though, but I can't add the textbox in. I followed sox's guide, I got the background right, I did have to make it around 50 percent thought because the picture I used took up too much space. I tried adding the textbox in. All it gave me was the box and the font inside it. An suggestions?
