The jet crashed as it attempted to land at Smolensk air base in Russia in thick fog, killing all 97 people on board.
Russian officials have said the pilots ignored warnings from air traffic control to divert to another airport.
A week of mourning has been called in Poland where a two-minute silence will be held at noon (1000 GMT) on Sunday.
Russia has also declared Monday a day of mourning for the victims, whose remains have been flown to morgues in Moscow.
Relatives of the dead have begun arriving in the Russian capital, officials there said.

I think you've missed a big part of what makes this such a big deal.

This group was going to a memorial for the massacre at Katyn. That is when the Soviets killed all the polish military leaders and many doctor/lawyer/professional types as well. It was in 1940 when Germany and Russia had divided up Poland. Russia wanted to get rid of the Polish government/military leadership and supplant it with their own, which they did. The group that died in the plane crash were part of the legacy of that underground government that persisted from the 1940's. While we can't prove it.... this could be Russia finishing the job if you catch my drift.

That just sucks. However, based on Russian actions, I don't think they did it. Do we know if the black box was recovered? Perhaps it could shed some light on why the pilots tried to land in such impossible conditions.

I saw some of this on TV. What I find interesting is "Russian officials have said the pilots ignored warnings from air traffic control to divert to another airport." By ignoring, do they mean communication stopped or did the pilots disagree and say screw it we will land? All pilots should know communication is the key to a safe flight. Ignoring air traffic control will result in disasters such as this.

As Elara said, a blackbox would come in handy so we can see exactly how it went down cause that seems a bit strange they ignored warnings

As geo pointed out there could be a lot more to the story. It's not likely to see so much important figures get knocked off all at once. Fog might have been a part but I think the biggest smoking gun in this case could be the black box. There is only one person I can think of to blame and that is the pilot... someone needs to check him out and get the black box ASAP.

The chick they interviewed on TV said if it were in USA it would have been terrorists. So I guess she thinks terrorism doesn't exist outside usa

Wow, that's terrible. I hadn't heard this until I came here. That Russia might have done it is a little suspicious, but I doubt they would do it, especially in such a way that got media attention like this. A plane crash like that would have an investigation, and that could be make for a lot of trouble if someone was responsible.

It kinda sucks that their president and most of their officials/ cabinet died in the crash. I don't think that there was any sort of terrorism involved- how can you prove that Russia is trying to destroy people? (of course, how can you prove that they aren't?)

Really, the most important thing to me is the Polish government now. They are missing nearly everyone they have, whether or not Russia may have contacted the aircraft is unimportant at this moment. It would make more sense to debate this in a few months when the Polish government gets its government staffed with people again. I wish them luck and I think that this is a terrible thing that happened, regardless of the blame.
