We're getting close to exceeding the current servers limits so I'm going to be transferring to a server which will literally be twice as powerful. The interesting thing is that the new server will be about the same price as the current, just a little more but as I said, twice the power.

The current server sometimes has DNS issues so hopefully the new server will fix that problem. And the biggest reason for the migration is the fact that traffic might really jump after sending out the newsletter (which will take probably 3-4 weeks to finish) and with the new features coming soon on top of that, you can expect Vizzed activity to be pretty high a month from now.

For those who remember the last server migrations, they never go smoothly and usually result into vizzed being down for a day or 2. Hopefully the board is only down for an hour but I have a feeling that wont be the case which is why I'm giving this notice this far in advance. I'll also be making an announcement a day before the migration.

it's worse for some people than for others.... I'm pretty sure anyone who wasn't North American had a longer wait than the rest of us.

I don't remember it being too bad though. Either way it's good to let people know about it beforehand.

One or two day wait, who cares. It's only for the good of vizzed and to make it productive so who can complain about that. Sometimes you have to sacrifice things in order to get better results. I'm sure most people will understand. Hopefully it doesn't happen but if it does so be it.

Yeah, I am okay that it is only a day. It is great to have some of the problems fixed cause of the change though... I am glad that vizzed is growing so much!

I'm definitely not looking forward to it but I know it's something that needs to be done. I'll probably get anxiety Thursday morning just thinking about doing it lol. Last time I came very close to losing months worth of data. Transferring a database the size of vizzed database is one heck of a job

The past migrations have taken me 8+ hours each due to messing up or losing data which I had to try and recover.

That is true, not sure I can help then. I would help transfer all the files and leave you to database but that would not work cause I would probably have to download it all first then upload it to new server

I am going to put this server to use after the transfer. This server expires on the 23rd I think so that gives me about a week to use it for downloading/uploading stuff for the RTR and GYR

Well, at least it's a change for the better, even though it is a hard job. And even if there is a long wait, I don't think anybody should be complaining about it anyways.

Change of plans, I'll be doing it Wednesday instead of Thursday. The reason is because I didn't realize my wife only worked half a day on Thursday and when she gets home we usually spend time together which would interfere with this. It's better that I do this on Wednesday so that I can dedicate more time to this in case something goes wrong. Plus Wednesdays are usually the least busiest day of the week on vizzed which also works out.

Actually I've been meaning to tell you, that yesterday vizzed was having DNS server issues for like 20 minutes. It was my internet or computer because all other sites worked perfectly fine, just vizzed was doing it. Everytime I tried to come on to the site it would say that and not let me do anything with vizzed, not even see it.

I remember back a while loosing our posts and any activity on the board that we had done for the past few days. It sucks, but oh well. I wonder if that was a server change too.

I'm not sure if you're mixing this up with the migration but in late 2004 we migrated from the old acmlm board engine to the new acmlm board engine which resulted into everyone starting out fresh. Never again will that happen though and it wasn't my idea in the first place.

Looking forward to this and Viz gets another push in the right direction if it's double power does that mean that you can add the data's worth of another vizzed board?
Or does it just hold up better with less glitches? Either way I knew the vizzed board was the right place to look to for big things.

Double power doesn't really mean double data, just means that it'll be able to handle twice as much traffic without any noticeable different in page load times. However, right after the switch there will be a pretty big increase in page load times (until traffic doubles, than it'd be where it's at right now, which isn't bad).

Sorry David, I'm just clarifying here. By big increase in load times, do you mean the pages will take longer to load until there's more traffic? I don't think that makes much sense, so do you mean pages will load faster?

By the way, every page loads instantly for me since the new vizzed experience It's awesome!
