I think that you should use both ways.
On my gameboy, I usually get my pokemon and go to grassy areas and fight for hours.
But when you fight trainers you gain more exp. points, but it's easier to lose, because they have more than one pokemon with them.
A long as if I catch every pokemon, personaly I don't. I catch pokemon only in order to fill my pokedex or if they are too strong or rare.

I think to train weaker pokemon, you should go to the Elite 4, if you have strong pokemon, and put the exp. helmet, I totaly forgot what is it called, or put your weakess pokemon first and switch it out. It is better way to make your weak pokemon vs. harder pokemons because it gives you more exp. I also catch every pokemon I see, so I could fill out my pokedex.

I mostly use trainers to level up my pokemon. if i've beaten all the trainers then i'll use wild pokemon from stronger areas and use the exp. share or use the old switch out for a stronger pokemon technique.

I would actually recommend going against wild pokemon about... 1-5 lvls below your pokemon if it is regular affectiveness, 5-10 if your pokemon is weak to it (i.e. training a quilava against some ground pokemon or something) and ones 0-5 lvls above your pokemon if your pokemon is strong against the wild pokemon (Such as training that same quilava against some grass types, make sure it has some fire type attacks!). but if they are available, fight the trainers once you think you can take them. Make sure you are not too far from a pokemon center, though. If you are too far, then it will be a pain going back to heal them.

Against trainers is one of the best ways because of all the XP you get. I also catch alot of Poke'mon that I like and don't have yet. I like collecting them, training them, and getting them to evolve. That's my opinion on this topic.

I usually train in wild grass when all the trainers are beaten, and I use exp. share when I fight against trainers. I make my guys strong enough to beat the gym, so I can find more trainers to train against. I usually only use grass when they are not yet strong enough for the gym.

Wild pokemon give something like 2/3s the EXP that Trainer pokemon do. Thus, VS seeker and the like is better.

For me, just grinding in the grasslands with one pokemon does the job. I usually train my cyndaquil in the first patch of grass accesible from the beggining of the game until he's around level 9-12. Then the rest of the trainers should be a cinch. I usually train only one pokemon, and fight with just that pokemon, so my main pokemon tends to make hard battles look easy. Sounds selfish, yes, but it works for me..P:
(Except for that dragon trainer...her kingdra killed my typhlosion twice before I could beat her..)

I think it's better to train them against other trainers, because they give more experience, and, as a rule, are more powerful than the wild Pokemon.
