After months of rumours and the absolute earthquake unleashed by Sony, we have possible news about the new batch of consoles to hit the market. While not much has yet trespassed about PS6, likely due to Sony's current status, the new console by Microsoft has revealed both a target release date and target price.
The target release date is 2028, more specifically the 4th quarter, which means roughyl two years until it hits the market. More than enough time to see its final name and all the details about it. It's also known that Microsoft plans to release a portable device one year earlier, though we still don't know if it's related to this new console or whatever.
The target price is the interesting part. The range starts at $1,200, which is higher than the minimum wage in lots of countries. The range extends up to $1,800 which is basically three times the cost of an Xbox Series X. And the obvious question here is: ARE YOU GUYS CRAZY OR WHAT?
We know the price of components has risen to prohibitive levels, but this is plainly insane. A next generation console being priced two or three times higher than the current one is nuts, even more if we consider that the soon-to-come GTA6 will most probably set the standard for triple A games in the future to be priced at $100 (and if it's not GTA6 then for sure this new generation would apply it two years from now), meaning that a console and a handful of games are worth two months of your salary.
I'm out of words to describe this madness. I know there's people who will buy it, even if it costs more than what they earn in two months, but the fact people are idiots isn't an excuse to be pulling off things like these. For that price you can get two decent PCs which can run Steam and most of its games, why would you buy a single console with half the capabilities and with a low level of exclusive games?
I want to believe the price is just for the console and not the handheld device coming the year before, englobed within this Project Helix. I mean, a handheld device double the price of the Switch 2? That can't work out, plain and simple. No matter how powerful it is or the battery life or whatever, it's way too much compared to the more experienced competition.
What do you guys think? Will they lower the expected price as the release gets near? Do you even think a new console is unnecessary because of the overpriced components and the lack of jump from the previous generation? Or this is what the future holds for the gaming industry unless they reconsider their path?
