Lorelei is for many fans the very first Elite Four member they have ever faced. By the time players reach the Indigo Plateau, not much is known about the characters they'll be facing. Lorelei has the important role of setting the standard, and I'd argue she does it quite well.

Her type of choice is Ice. This has always been a strong attacking type but in Generation 1 it was one of the best, behind Psychic and Normal. Unfortunately there aren't quite enough Ice types in Kanto to fill a roster, so Slowbro ends up filling in for her.

Lorelei's Pokemon love to use moves that can inflict Freeze. Blizzard even has a 30% freeze chance in Generation 1! When you get frozen in this generation, the only ways to unthaw without items are the move Haze being used, or being hit with a fire move. For the record, Lorelei doesn't carry either.

Lorelei practically always uses the same team of Dewgong, Jynx, Cloyster, Slowbro, and Lapras. Occasionally she'll throw in an extra Pokemon for a rematch, such as a Piloswine in Fire Red and Leaf Green, but that's it.

---

Like I mentioned, Elite Four members are usually very hidden in the game's story, often even being completely omitted. Lorelei is a rare case where you do actually learn some things about her. Not in generation 1, but starting in Fire Red and Leaf Green we get some background on her.

She grew up and lives on Four Island, in the Sevii Islands. This island chain close to mainland Kanto was added as the post-game content in these titles. Upon reaching Four Island, the player can actually find Lorelei and even fight off some Team Rocket grunts with her in a little cave. It's in that little cave that she encountered her ace Lapras as a young girl! In the Let's Go games, this Team Rocket interaction takes place on Route 10 instead.

Inside her house, we learn Lorelei is a perpetually single woman as well, owning Pokemon plushies to keep her company. There's actually a hidden mechanic behind her plushies. Beating the Elite Four rematches 25 times will cause the game to spawn an additional plushie in her home. You can end up filling her house up quite nicely with them.

---

Overall Lorelei is a fine Elite Four member. She's not involved in the main plot, but it's nice that she makes a cameo appearance in the post-game story. Her team is memorable and I'd argue she's one of the harder ones to beat in battle.
