Painters have been some of the most respected members of society throughout history.

Burgh is the third gym leader of the Unova region. He resides over the biggest city of the entire Pokemon world at the release of Black and White, Castelia City. Like his name almost spells out, he is a big fan of the underrated Bug type.

Burgh will grant you the Insect Badge upon being defeated. He also owns an art gallery in Castelia City where he hangs his paintings.

Pokemon Black, White

Burgh is first seen inside Pinwheel Forest. He frequently goes there to draw inspiration for his art works. When the Dragon Skull gets stolen by Team Plasma, Burgh teams up with the player to retrieve it. Of course he knowingly sends the child to the side of the forest where the evil organisation is located, while he sits on a bench in the quiet abandonded part.

Burgh joins you right as you discover the location of the Sage that was organizing the whole affair. One more battle and the bad guys leave. Burgh bids his farewell, though you'll see him again very soon.

When you reach Castelia City and eventually find the gym 2 hours later, Burgh will be waiting for you. Only you'll have to squeeze your body through walls of honey whilst getting harrassed by grown men dressed as clowns. Very weird gym design, I'd have a word with a therapist if it was me.

Burgh wants to show off the power of his Bug Pokemon. Scarier words have never been spoken. He leads off with a Whirlipede, decently fast and strong for this point in the game I suppose. His Dwebble isn't a big threat, just be careful of the Rock typing. Finally, his ace Leavanny has very high stats for this point in the game, but its moveset is fairly weak. Plus it is a Grass/Bug type so blowing on it will defeat it.

Upon leaving the gym, you are greeted by Bianca being a damsel in distress (again). Her Pokemon got stolen by Team Plasma (honestly how, almost deserved for losing to patrats) and it is up to you to get it back! Burgh and Iris join you on this long and difficult quest. When you make quick work of Team Plasma and get Munna back to Bianca, you get hit with a smoke bomb and they escape. Burgh is happy and goes back to whatever he does in his spare time. I know this café in Vienna, maybe he'd enjoy that.

Burgh, like Lenora, becomes this pseudo-member of your little rescue squad. He's never a big talker or do-er like Cheren, Bianca and yourself, but he'll join in on the talks and plans. I imagine he is just bored and thinks it will give him cool painting ideas.

Like (most of) the other gym leaders, Burgh gets a hero moment when he storms Team Plasma's castle to stop the Wise Sages from getting in your way. Very neat to see active involvement from these characters!

Pokemon Black 2, White 2

Burgh is among the gym leaders that keep their position in the sequels. The player first meets him down in the Castelia Sewers, where he comes out of some cave that's randomly there.

Burgh is a lot less important to the story of the sequels. He has updated his gym, however. This should be fantastic news, I wonder what artistic design he came up with after going to therapy! Uhhhh.... we are crawling through spider web tubes and get birthed out of cocoons? Can we please go back to the honey walls and clowns?

Burgh is fairly boring to talk about as he keeps the exact same team pretty much. Only his Whirlipede gets replaced by a Swadloon. The pre-evolution of his ace Leavanny... They made his team less diverse and interesting for no reason. At least on challenge mode he'll use some new guys, Karrablast and Shelmet! These aren't strong Pokemon but it's fun to see them used by an important character, as you can't obtain them for a long time.

Like his fellow Unova Gym Leaders, Burgh is present for the Pokemon World Tournament. He can be fought in the Unova Leaders and Type Experts challenges. He evolves some of his old Pokemon, using the likes of Escavalier, Crustle, Scolipede, and Accelgor. He then adds some great old Bug types like Vespiquen and Heracross, while also adding the new but scary Durant. No not the basketball player.

---

Burgh is a fun character overall. He is one of the most flamboyant characters in Pokemon, and I like his inclusion in our little Scooby Doo Squad in the originals.

I do wish we would learn a bit more about Burgh's personal life. He's probably the recurring character you know the least about, and I think tying his background in with the plot would have made more sense.
